Top 10 Most Influential Bloggers of Our Times

by Guest on June 17, 2011

This is a guest post from Evelio Pereira, the guy behind Lifechitect.com. You can read more about him at the end of this post.

When Tim Berners-Lee invented the World-Wide Web in 1989, he had no idea it would turn into such a diverse and important part of our society. He did not imagine that the 7 continents of the world would come together and conquer distances and time itself, to form the new core of society.

The web has evolved through-out the years and I cannot help but feel excited for what there is still to come. Blogging was created in the early 1990′s. This allowed masses of people to connect and share infinite amounts of information. Although we are still in the early years of this technology, many great minds have emerged and forged their place in history. Learn from them, be creative and earn your own place in the upcoming history books. The are many other bloggers that I’m sure I’ve missed and deserve being mentioned. This is a personal list of some of the blogs that I follow, and some are suggestions of other bloggers that I greatly respect. Feel free to comment and add to the list. With out further delay, here are my:

He takes his readers by hand and guides them through the pathway to the passive income lifestyle. He now makes up to $40,000 per month from passive income alone.

#5: Darren Rowse – problogger.net

Darren started blogging in 2002 when he read an article about blogging. He’s discovery turned into a passion and later a business. In his blog, he teaches everyone about the magic of blogging. His 320,000 readers and his passion for blogging get him into the top 5 of the most influential bloggers.

Nice list, Evelio. The only one I’ve never visited is zenhabits, and feeling the overwhelm right now after getting back from vacation… I SHOULD pay the blog a visit. ;)

Thanks,
Peggy

I will add three more to your list. I personally think these three are more influential by far.

1. Brian Clark – Copyblogger
2. Michael Hyatt
3. Jon Acuff

Good list though.

I agree with most of the people on this list, but there are many that I haven’t even heard of before. I generally read a lot of blogs of wide scope in topics, so I was a bit surprised to not have had heard of some.

Putting together a list like this is difficult, because there are so many influential bloggers out there depending on the niche (if they have one). Here are some of the other names I would throw into the ring: Arianna Huffington (Huffington Post), Michael Arrington (TechCrunch), Anil Dash, Heather Armstrong (dooce.com), Rob Neyer (baseball writer now at SBNation), Chris Guillebeau (Art of Non-Conformity) and so on.

I’m sure you could do a Top 100 and not make everyone happy. I was going to add in the Boing Boing crew, Jason Kottke, and John Gruber, but their writing styles are very different from more “traditional” bloggers.

I’m not old, but I have been reading online for a good 15 years now. I’ve seen blogs rise and fall. The ones I listed I have been reading for at least three years now, which is ancient in blog years. :P

As for life, take a quick look at my blog and you’ll see the updates. Not great, but not the end of the world either.

Nice job on the list Evelio, no question these are some tremendous people, although I’m much more in line with James on this one. In other words, the term ‘blogger’ has a much larger scope than how many see it, and the subjects the above write about are more personal development/marketing types— what is actually a pretty small section of the blogosphere.

I’d also add Gary V to the list for that same reason.

Regardless, wonderful job, and thanks Alex for putting this out there.

And great to see you James!

Marcus

James,

I sort of disagree with you on a couple of your choices, I would hesitate to call Huffington a “blogger” at all. She is more of a CEO. They have far to many artilces culled from different sources and done by teams of people. There is little “blogger” about her. IMO, it would be like calling the president of Fox News a “newscaster”. To a lesser extent same Arrington and some other.

The larger collectives are great, but they are a collaborative effort and seem to have gone beyond the “blogger” title.

Chris Guillebeau, though, is one of my personal favorites, and I 100% agree should be on any top 10 list. Great call there!

Like you mentioned though, you could do 100 and still have people pissed at those left off. So much of this revolves around personal opinion

Monster list Alex.. I agree with them all. I also agree with Fred.. Brian Clark needs to be here and also Chris Brogan and Dan Schawbel.. nothing happens without good branding and relationship building and these 2 kill it in both.

Hello everyone and thanks for the comment!

I agree, it is impossible to create a list of top 10 bloggers and satisfy everyone. This is simply a list from my point of view and research. There are hundreds of great bloggers out there for as many niches and it would take a very long list to mention them all. Even then, I think we would still miss some. This is why I encourage you to continue posting comments with contributions to this list. Mention those you think are worth mentioning and why. This will be a great resource for those interested in following great minds and extraordinary bloggers that they have yet to come across.

Hope you Enjoy this Post.
Looking forward to reading your comments!

Sincerely.
Evelio Pereira

Thanks again for contributing such a thoroughly researched post Evelio.
I agree that you can never please everyone, but one thing I did think when this post originally landed in my inbox was that you had done a bloody good job of covering the whole gamut of blogging and keeping it pretty much on queue as to who has helped shape blogging as we know it.

Great stuff mate, and thanks for keeping up with the conversation, even if I did post this at 8am instead of 8pm (after giving you 24 hrs notice!) whoops. sorry.

Seth Godin and Darren Rowse are some of my favorites. Seth is somewhat of a philosopher and really gets me thinking. Engagement is key when it comes to blogging and I feel both Seth and Darren have it down perfectly.

Evelio,

Great list of some great blogger. Narrowing down a “top 10″ for bloggers is a tough job. here are so many good ones out there and so much of it revolves around “personal opinion” as much as raw traffic numbers.

You came up with a great list of some great. At some point or another I have checked out every one of these guys.

Hey Alex,

Great post. Regarding Tim Ferriss, it’s pretty amazing how he came from out of nowhere starting about 2007 and quickly became one of the top blogs. And the reason is: great content. He’s written many ‘evergreen’ posts that I’ve come back to many times.

Hey Alex,

I haven’t been around your blog for awhile. This was a great post to come back and read. These really are the bloggers you hear about all the time around the web. I hope someday I can get my brand through the massive crowd.

Even it seems dam near impossibe to get your brand up to the top you should be scared of the competition. If they could do it then that means it’s very much possible. I believe the key to getting anywhere is persistance.

God bless,

What strikes me is how simplistic the design of these blogs are! I am currently looking at redesigning the layout of my own blog, but seeing these successful bloggers’ blogs, I am starting to think that design isn’t really that important. They are still able to rank really well and achieve high PRs with a very simple looking blog!
