Welcome to the Best Bloggers are Natural Hackers BlogStars Series!
In this series you’ll discover how to use your hacking abilities (creative ideas) to innovate and create unique features and posts for your blog, thus building trust, cementing your message – and gaining more readers in the process. (well at least not losing them!)
Before I begin let me ask that you go and read Kiesha’s opening post in the series 7 Signs You’re Hacker and How it Can Help Your Blog because not only is it brilliant, it also sets the tone beautifully and gives a whole new meaning to the word ‘Hacker’.
‘Ever used a butter knife to tighten a screw?’ indeed…
Welcome back, I hope you enjoyed the read, and more importantly, now have a better understanding of what we are talking about when we say Hacker. I particularly enjoyed that post, mainly because it got me thinking about how much I was a Hacker, that was until I realised that they were not my memories, but episodes of Macgyver – man that guy was a major Hacker! Still, I do have my moments. I once fixed an iPod with a filing cabinet – true story.
Anyway…
So Kiesha gives us some signs you might be already thinking outside the square a little ,but more importantly she gives us 7 ways to incorporate this into our blogging . So now it is my turn, and today I want to share how I think I am thinking outside the square a little with my own blogging.
What the Hack am I Talking About Now?
Late last year I started my own SEO Company called BuRP! Consulting, and although I only have one client at this point (two if you count my Mum) it is something that I plan on building up throughout the course of 2011.
Now – I have this Blog that is already well established but it is branded under my own name. I need to find a way to leverage this self branded blog against a new business that does not bare this brand. How about a rebrand, but without losing the name I already have. Let’s incorporate a new logo with my initials and create a Tagline of
‘Teaching You How To Build, Rank & Profit From Niche Sites’
A New Look, Same Direction
BuRP! as a name came about for two reasons, 1:) the catch phrase, or tagline that goes with it is ‘SEO Without the Hiccups’and THAT is just too good to pass up in my pun oriented brain, and 2:) BuRP is actually an acronym for, yep that’s right:
- Build
- Rank
- Profit
Now my new look blog is helping to echo the message of BuRP! Consulting – “SEO Without The Hiccups” without any of my current readers even noticing. Since they are not my target audience (well I figure you know what you have to do or you are picking it up quite quickly – but of course if you need my services…
)there is no point suddenly bombarding them (you) with sales pitches and sudden changes of direction and message.
Now I can continue to focus on Niche Site Marketing as I have done previously and at the same time slowly go through the process of incorporating the BuRP! Message across both sites.
There is still a lot of changes due to take place on this blog, narrowing down the focus even harder and instilling that Build, Rank, Profit Message even more – but for now the new changes are sufficient.
What’s so ‘Hacker’ About That?
The Hacker, according to the new definition is: a person who adds his or her own special tweaks to an object, often using it far beyond what it was originally intended to do and I think that I am using my blog for reasons that differ greatly from what I originally intended. More importantly, the new purpose for the blog and direction it is taking is perfectly in-line with where it was heading before, and THAT I think is what is paramount to keeping your readers and your online presence intact.
I reckon that’s pretty Hacky, not that that is a word – but I do love what Kiesha has done with this word, because considering that anything technical usually has me either crying in a corner or banging my head against the fridge repeatedly it’s nice to be consider myself a Hacker, even if it is only for a post.
So What’s The Lesson Here?
What Can You Garner from this post? What’s the point apart from a blatant promotion of my new company? Well, well – umm, well if you look at, OK so there is that – hang on a second, someone’s at the door.
Stay tuned for the Next Post in the Series from Hector Cuevas, Scheduled for the 17th January 2011, and then don’t even think about going anywhere – because the Awesome Ana Hoffman will be finishing the Blogstars Series on the 20th January. But enough about them, what about you?
· How are you using your Blog differently to how you originally intended?
· How can you apply this new Hacker Principle to your own Blogging efforts?

Hi Alex – I started what was going to be a personal blog where I could rant and what not, but I ended up turning it into a site for those of us who are taking all out massive action and starting many businesses or projects at once. What I wanted was a no BS site that cut through all the mindset stuff (people like us already have) and get to the good of how to make massive stuff happen.
And of course there is cross promotion of my other endeavors there too.

love the butter knife analogy, mainly as James keeps stealing all my screw drivers for vacuum cleaner modifications and poking in to electrical sockets how that child is alive i will never understand, perhaps Autistic children and crazy people can’t be electrocuted, i heard of an elderly schizophrenic woman who pulled apart her mains box on the central coast with her bear hands no gloves and power still switched on so “they” couldn’t message her , her family don’t know how she wasn’t killed …. so not the point cos I’ve gone off topic, i think i was trying to say great post and definitely one series of blogs to keep an eye on. Now off to stop James from hacking into my profile on the desktop so he can google stuff. …..and keep him away from my eBay account

he hacked the profile again yesterday and he’s won me a PS2 probably becuase he pulled the old one apart with a screwdriver and can’t put it back together though he did find a DVD i was looking for…what the hell he thinks we’re going to do with that i don’t know hehe, He keeps me busy and broke.
I got up this morning to my drill (yes i own a cordless power drill and i know how to use it)in the middle of the lounge room floor and an assortment of attachments thankfully non of which fit the drill i don’t know what he was thinking..he then took off to the yard and picked some flowers for me and put them in a vase…this is looking like another post for my blog lol……the dangers of sleeping when you have an Autistic child…..
Miss you too

LOL!!! MacGyver! That was my step-dad’s show! And I believe that may have been the seed for my current hacking abilities. My step-dad emulates him daily – he uses duct tape to fix EVERYTHING including the kitchen sink (true story!)
Alex, you had me laughing so hard throughout this whole post – I loved how you hacked the end with a “someone’s at the door!”
Amazing post. I love the new hacks to your site – they were indeed, quite imperceptible. Nice!

Hi Alex
My blog was initially as a platform for sourced lavender products and information on all things lavender.
However, I have now added my Patricia’s Ponderings which at first I thought would be a one off. It stimulated so much conversation it will now feature as part of my blog.
This week I alluded to the lovely lavender but unless you are hiding behind that lavender bush; it’s just another one of my ponderings
And I’m glad I don’t have to be a techie to be a “hacker” too Alex. But then I have just done a barter system with a blogging buddy who will do some techie tasks for me and I will do proof reading and writing articles for them. Win-win for us both.
From Keisha’s post…..I have some ideas for offline promotion too. Will have to see how that one goes. Maybe worth a post some time.

Patricia,
Just got off of chat with you so can’t add too much here without feeling like I am repeating myself.
As I said though, I love the direction you are taking and I think with your existing online presence you really do that the option to go in any direction you like!
Go get some!
Well Alex,
I think that everyone who every built links is an hacker, according to the new definition of the word. Because links weren’t meant to be built for search engine purpose, but for showing related content or informing visitors about a similar/cool/useful website. So, if you are a link builder you are definitely a hacker(ok, not to mention, using forums for link building, comments etc).
Being an “hacker” can give you the edge, because you are thinking “out of the box” and see the big picture. (a knife doesn’t have to be used only for cutting, what if I don’t go and buy a screwdriver but rather use this knife)
Great initiative by Keisha, I can see everybody is going strong this year.(lots of ebook out, new ideas and concepts, it looks like it’s going to be a great year)

You know, the stuff your customers don’t care about, but the rest of us want to know. Just a thought of how you could use your personal blog and still promote your business (ie tell stories about your business).

January 14, 2011 at 10:03 AM
Hi Alex,
icebluebanana started out as a place for me to store links and techy procedures so that I could easily get to them from anywhere.
Not long after that, I learned about blogging and started posting really random stuff, mostly for fun as no one was reading.
Since then I have learned about things like seo, affiliate marketing, and the beauty of single page websites that people do not immediately click away from.
That last one sure caught me by surprise.
Anyway, ibb changed again recently when I chose to narrow the focus of my writing.
Really, in the terms that you are using here, I would say that bloggers are always “hacking” as we are always changing the nature of what we do in order to find something better.
BTW, I like the rebranding you are doing. I hope it works for you.
Have a good day!

Man, that just makes the name of your blog even more bloody ambiguous!!
