How not to write an ebook – Are you asking the right questions?

Alex Whalley's Organic Traffic Jam - Coming Soon

by Alex on July 15, 2010

Motivation is an important ingredient in any endeavour but it doesn’t matter how motivated you are, until you start asking the right questions you’re gonna go nowhere fast.

This is a post about my upcoming eBook, but it’s also a post about Motivation and how I’m so clever that I actually manage to trick myself – a lot.

I liken it to those times when you are so uber focused on something that it is not until you break from whatever it is you were doing that you realise you can’t feel the left side of your face – and your leg went missing a while ago.  It’s amazing how when we go into a zone everything else falls by the wayside. But being ‘in the zone’ is not all cheese and biscuits you know.

When you are zoned in, well when I am zoned in I tend to work through process really well, but as far as analysing what I am doing goes – that can wait. This time is all about taking action and getting as much done as possible but what I found was that my daily Goal and the way I was Motivated did not mesh. I was trying to get a square peg in a round hole and it just wasn’t working

Analysing my Motivation was the best thing I could possibly have done because before I actually took a step back from the cocoon I had created at my desk, I was becoming a master at the art of not writing my Ebook.

What Motivates you?

what is your motivation to blogWhat are you Motivated by? Is it that brand new car in the driveway, or perhaps the luxury holiday -whenever you feel like it?I am Motivated by a love of what I do and the desire to learn more and teach others, and the motivation of financial security isn’t exactly a kick in the teeth either . But none of this is going to help me get my eBook written.  It seems that motivation is not the issue here, but rather the questions I am asking myself in relation to the force behind it. Huh? Basically I don’t think it’s a What kind of moment.

Building a Framework

Yeah, I have talked about setting SMART goals and building a framework to structure your progress and help make it manageable, so I applied this to my eBook. Surely that will help, structure is an important aspect to success after all. Alright! Now I had an index page and a few random chapters floating around, but the product evaluations, the online assessments, the affiliate links, all the bits were still unfinished. So much for a framework.

Welcome to the Jungle (it gets worse here day by day)

(Check out my Guest Post about the ‘Pitfalls of working from home’ @ The Big Red Tomato Co. As it covers in detail what this next paragraph entails.)

I have two very young children at home who apparently don’t have a sleeping gene in their body. They are really happy and beautiful children but they just don’t sleep. It means that when my wife and I are awake, we are not really awake at all – if you know what I meaisbbaifrddddddddddd (sorry) What this equates to is a very erratic work schedule that makes getting things done a lot trickier, and means that I need to start learning to manage my time better if I am to ever make it big in this arena (and I will people, just you wait) and the best way to manage your time is to start asking the right questions.

How Now Brown Cow

negative comments are goodEgad the Bovine’s got it! It’s not about what motivates and Inspires you, it’s about HOW you are motivated and inspired! This was a ‘gamechanger’ for me (well, so was finding a coffee shop open at 4am the other day so I think I may abuse the title a little) and made me change the way I approached my eBook and pretty much everything I tackled online.

Do you See what I mean?

Everyone learns a different way, personally it’s through visuals, so I literally don’t know what you mean until I see what you mean (if you know what I mean) and this is why I generally try to write through examples, metaphor and analogies – because you can SEE the reasoning and therefore understand. I have always known that this is how I learn, and yet I never thought to incorporate it into my goal setting. If I was going to get an eBook written and I needed to motivate myself then I needed to SEE it!

Who wants an eCover?

So I designed and created my eBook cover. Granted it’s nothing fancy but it looks the part, tells the visitor what they will get and more importantly it is something tangible that I can now use to give myself the motivational upper cut I needed to finish the thing. (Would love your feedback on the image actually)

A fellow Blogger and expert in the area of selling information products online – John Soares touched on this point exactly in a post titled:4 reasons why you should write your sales page first. I think he raises some good points that echo what I am saying here – I highly recommend you have a read.

Side servings of Accountability anyone?

This is another way that I am motivated. Another HOW that will help me get things moving. I find, well I like to think that it is a general human characteristic but unfortunately it is not – that when I am made accountable, then I am bound by my word and the bond I have with my readers and fellow bloggers. By posting this today I have done just that and now have no excuses whatsoever to get this Awesome Resource finished.

Good stuff here Alex! “I need to start learning to manage my time better if I am to ever make it big in this arena (and I will people, just you wait)” – this is EXACTLY where I’m at. I’m in the midst of restructuring things to be more efficient and motivated and all those lovely things that equate to big results and success. I’m also in the middle of getting an e-book done, so this one hit me right in the gut, lol.

I really like the cover of your book, it definitely draws the eye :)

Keep up the awesome work, I bet your book’s going to be a killer.

Hey Alex,

The ebook cover looks great! What did you use to create it, if I may ask? I like :-)

Good luck finishing it. Now that you’ve put it out there, now you’re accountable. The topic looks very interesting and helpful to many people (me included).

Great job (so far),

Well done Alex,

The graphics look great and It does make you want to open it and found out what the content is inside. Also thanks for coming over to my blob! Can really relate to managing your time. I too have two young boys, our youngest son Oli has his 5th birthday tomorrow so organising things for that completing tasks on my online venture and keeping my offline business in tact can be a nightmare at times.

What has helped me recently is having a white board up on the wall so I see everything. I come to my office (which is where I probably spend most of my time!!) and writing down all my daily tasks and my subconcious mind makes me do them with out fail. With having them written out, when I am away from my office and the task is not done.

It seems to eat away at you until it is completed. As for motivating me. It’s times like tomorrow for my son’s birthday. Being able to be there and spend time with my family. It’s not quite to the stage I want it but with dedication and determination I will get there.

When will the ebook be completed? Was wanting some more help on keyword research. I actually use Market Samuri and some times Micro Niche Finder.

Cheers

First of all – Happy Birthday to your boy for the other day.
I like the whiteboard idea, I have one but it is too small and I definitely need a bigger one to visualise everything.
You say you use MS and Niche Finder, would love to hear how you find them, actually thinking about purchasing myself just so I can do an honest comparison. I figure since I am the keyword research bloggger that it’s only fitting
Thanks again for stopping by Craig

Hi Alex,

Time management is a bit of an issue for me these days, and needs proper planning.

I think the way you see yourself is how you should present yourself. Be yourself and not someone else that others want you to be. Your readers, including me, like the way you present your discoveries and teachings.

Your are using your knowledge well to server yourself, and others along the process. As soon as you see something that works for you, I’ve noticed you publish it straight away, not as a means of showing off, but as a way you want to help others as well. This will eventually lead to your financial dreams.

I’ve spent a lot of my life offline helping others before me, and more or less plan to do the same on my blog. We seem to follow similar traits. I need to blog hop a bit more frequently as I am lacking there. Like I said have a bit of a time management issue trying to do too many things.

The eBook cover looks good. What software did you use for it ? Like I said do send me a copy for review.

I actually have photoshop but do not use it much. When mine is finished I’ll give you a buzz, but at the rate I am going, it may take me a while. If yours have covered a fair bit of what I plan to cover myself, I may end up recommending yours instead, but we will see. But if there is more than I want to add my own way, I will ask you for permission to re-edit to add my own stuff and see if I can distribute. We’ll see how time management fits with me first.

Hey Alex,

Keep working at getting your e-book out there! I know exactly what you’re going through. I just finished mine and motivation was something that I had to really push through. Keep at it, it’s a lot closer than you think. I finally sat down and finished it after several hours of good focused work when I had wasted tons of time the previous 2 weeks, procrastinating.

Keep going! Can’t wait to read it!

Yeah, I’m in the zone alright. I can’t get by the text editors with my own E-Book. You would think it’s the Bible by the way the editors carry on.
As far as the the image for your E-Book; looks cool. You do realize that the image is the logo for SEO Traffic Extreme.com, right? I don’t think it’s anything to get in a twist over, just realize when I do bring the site online I will be using that image for my avatar, however I don’t expect to have the site active as a Blog should be for at least a year! By that time I will have learned enough from you to make a go of the thing.

This is good stuff. It is definitely easier to get motivated when you almost see the final book ahead of you.

By the way, a good software to use for making nice-looking e-book and other product images is Cover Action Pro. It’s quite expensive, $197, but if you sell a lot of stuff, it’s probably worth it to make them look as good as possible to make the purchasing decision easier. :)

Other option is to learn to use Photoshop and especially the “free transform” tool is quite useful for transforming a regular image into different shapes, on another book image for example.

It’s funny Alex, let’s say you are a manager with a staff underneath you. You have to find ways to keep them motivated. A lot of people dream of working at home, and being their own boss, but they don’t about then needing to motivate themselves.

That’s why I think this post is important. If the dream is to be your own boss, then how will you as the boss motivate yourself as the employee?

Sounds a little crazy, but it makes sense in my head.

Hi Alex,

I really like the cover, and the title is great! Of course, I wanted to read it anyway.

Time management and goals have been on my mind lately, mostly because I am trying to figure out what I am going to be when I grow up. I like the way that you talk about inspiration. The thing is, it seems like inspiration only lasts so long. Then you either need a new source of inspiration, or the self-discipline to MAKE yourself work on the project.

Surely most people can relate to this. Another fine post, my friend.

By the way, thanks for pulling out the cow picture again. Hilarious.

Writting my own ebook is something I have been threatening to do for a while now. I think I should just get to it. taking action is very important but as you pointed out it should be the right action, It’s easy to get into a frenzy and foget the exact task at hand. There is a lot to be said for writing down your plan of action into steps, I find if I have my plan in front of me on paper it is easier to stay focused on all I need to do.
The graphics for your book look great man and tells people axactly what they are getting.

Hey Alex,

I know what you mean about the kids and trying to manage time around them. Personally, when I am working, I can’t stand anyone in the room with me, not even the wife. It’s just that I work better that way, I like to be 100% focused on what I am doing, can’t do that with the wife talking to me in the background. It may sound horrible, but I cherish the few hours I get when the wife is at work (she only works part-time) and the kids are at school. Kids summer break coming up next week which will also make my work pattern interesting (more late nights lol).

My family is also my biggest motivator, the chance to better our lives doing something I enjoy. All my goals are targeted to things we can do as a family, whether it is a simple meal out together or a holiday, or something more extravagant. The goals themselves, though have got to be tangible and achievable for them to be any use or they can quickly have the reverse effect and leave you flat.

Can’t wait for the ebook, looks great, you certainly done a good job on the graphics.

Cheers

Simon

Sorry about that, didn’t realise I’d used another email address (my commentluv all messed up not recognising my posts so might have tried a different one to see what happened without changing it back)

Sounds contradictory I know with the motivator being the distractor, but at the end of the day, it is the reason why we are doing it. I love doing things with my family which is why I focus on the time I have on my own so I don’t have to do as much when we are together. It sometimes means early mornings (past 2am here at the moment) but the end product will be so worth it.

Hi Alex, I liked how the road just curves and the lines speed on the cover. Captivating, pretty much reminiscent of keywords fluctuation. I find that I’m motivated through the simple things. How things work, come together, process. Thus, I talk a lot about that and I see here that you’re pretty much the same.

You seem to document your trials and from that try to make sense of them. Eventually, the final word is, you did it. It’s out there. What next? Isn’t it exciting?

I’m also working on my report and that article by John kind of puts a nice perspective to getting it all together. Congrats with the cover!

Hi Alex,

I could really relate to the “time” issue you have.
In our house (which is on the edge of a remote Thai village), no one apart from me has any interest in what day it is, let alone the bloody time! This is typical of rural Thailand and they think I worry too much about schedules and time…”planning” is not in the Thai psyche.

But you know, they are partially right. Way too often I worry about getting things done on time…but the only one who creates this time problem is me!

My 2 beautiful teenage daughters even threw out the only clock we had upstairs because the clicking drove them crazy. Sure I replaced it with a digital one but it’s gone missing!

My motivator will always be my 2 business passions. Our Thai silk website and my business blog. Ironically I am building it for my daughters to take over one day – they both have personal blogs and enjoy stacks of social networking.

So it seemed pretty logical for me to create a business they can walk into and apply their well developed social skills…they agree and are excited about what dad is creating just as long as I hang around to do all the necessary “business and deadlines” things that need to be done each day!!

You just got to love ‘em!….and I do.

By the way when is your book being released..sounds great to me. Just give me the release month as I don’t want to appear to be too much of a “clock watcher”

Thanks for sharing that, and I think you hit on a very true point about time being something we create for ourselves – and it’s true! It is similar to the comparison game whereby you tend to start racing against something or someone instead of going at your own pace.

I think the reason I re-read it is the fact that it had a great title and that I was not going to have to tax my brain over SEO material.
