I spy with my little eye

targeting traffic with keyword research tools

by Alex on July 29, 2010

Something beginning with ….Keywords!

Recently I posted an Article over at theInfoPreneur talking about free tools and resources that you can use to ‘steal SEO and Keyword secrets from the Pro’s, by basically copying what the guys already ranking on page one are doing.
I strongly recommend that you go and check it out if you have not already done so. The post is called How to Steal SEO secrets from the Pro’s and talks about two fantastic free resources that if used correctly are a great asset to any niche marketer or serious blogger:

  • The Google Toolbar
  • SEO Quake (Mozille Firefox plugin)

Now these two tools are fantastic to have in your arsenal, but recently I discovered a service that just blows my mind in terms of accuracy, speed and usability. The fact that it is completely free certainly confuses me some, but reaffirms how much crap there is out there that really shouldn’t cost a dime!  I’m starting to rant here so let me get back on track…

Want to find out what the Top Ten are up to?

I won’t go into too much detail about the process of finding and optimising keywords within profitable niches but I will say this, Part of the process of researching niches and keywords involves checking the top ten ranked sites for that phrase. This can take a while if you want to check each in detail… until now.

SecretPageSpy is a new free membership site that basically allows you to ‘spy’ on the competition and find out what they are up to in Keyword and SEO speak. This is a fantastic tool because part of the process of finding a profitable niche to build a site around involves making sure the top ten ranked sites for that keyword are going to be sites you can compete against, and even though a simple look over of the top ten can help you ascertain whether or not to ‘go for it’ imagine if you could find out everything that the top ten are doing, both in front of you and behind your back.

Secret Page Spy

keyword research secrets
SecretPageSpy offers two main parts to their service, Keywords and Domain names.

  • Enter your Keyword and get the listing of the top ten sites ranked for that phrase instantly. You can see not only what their position and pagerank is, you can also view incoming and outgoing link count as well as a comprehensive list of ALL the keywords they happen to be ranked for. That is incredible detail and there is so much insight you can garner from that information, I am not even going to start going into it here.
  • Enter your URL and this is where it gets tasty. When you input a URL it spits back a list of the site SEO details (like link count and title) but more importantly it provides a list of ALL the keywords that site is competing for. This is a fantastic way to come up with ideas for keywords that you may not have thought of yourself, or to see what other keywords you might try and compete for instead.

As I mentioned earlier, this tool is completely free and even if you never utilise it as part of a marketing strategy, I strongly recommend you go and have a play, even if it’s just to find out what your blog buddy down the street is up to.

But Wait! There’s more…

I spy with my little eye  (a Guest post at TechnShare)

This seems to be the trend in this post, because I quickly want to link you to another awesome tool that I recently came across called Keyword Eye. (check it out!)

I won’t go into too much detail here because that is what my first Contribution post over at TechnShare is for, so if you want to get the goss on the coolest ‘blogger friendly keyword research tool’ I have ever seen, then get over to TechnShare and read my post titled ‘How to get Traffic in 45 seconds’

That’s it, I’m out – under 700 words and THAT is a record for me (does it count though considering part of this post relied on linking to two others which now brings the total word count to….a lot!?)

Hope you enjoyed the tools & references provided  here and that they help you in your Keyword Optimization Journey.

  • If you have heard of or use any other cool free tools, please feel free to share them with us in the comments below.

To find valuable data about competition I recommend using the seoquake plugin for firefox and the web-based semrush.com tool (they have free and paid versions but the free version gives you already a good idea of the keywords your competitors are targeting)

SEMRush.
Nice, thanks for reminding me Andreas, I had totally forgotten about the big brother to SEOQuake, does similar things without the toolbar functionality I believe, could be wrong though, I’m sure you’ll sort me out if so :)
Thanks for stopping by Andreas.

Thanks for these links Alex, always good to get some free stuff. 8)

I shall be downloading Secret Page Spy and have a play with it. I paid for Market Samurai last year after joining the 30 day challenge, but it’s on a computer I no longer use, so I haven’t touched it for ages. :-(

I haven’t paid much attention to keywords yet, but it’s something I think I could get interested in – especially if it’s profitable. ;-)

Hey John,

Thanks for stopping by man, glad you are enjoying the tool, it really is a bit of fun mate – well they all are actually :)
I was going to buy MS just so I could promote it (they wont let you be an affiliate unless you purchase which is fair enough I guess) but thought ‘stuff it’ KRP works a treat.
Thanks for your comments John.

I was reading just yesterday that there is an awesome way to get an automatic discount on the Market Samuari product. Apparently, if you download the trial and then buy it within the first 6 days you can get the price down by a few bucks. I can’t remember the specifics, but it was more than $20 discount. If you buy after the 6 days the price goes up a touch, and then after that, it goes up to full price.

Anybody try with this method to see if it actually works?

Hey Karen, yes this is exactly right as I wanted to become an affiliate so I had to buy the product but I waited and waited and missed out on the $97, then had a chance at $127, now I will have to pay the full $!47 if I want it. All good, I’ll get it eventually, and really what’s $47? It’s not like you’re saving a grand or anything. (not ranting at you here Karen, I swear :) )

How you been anyway Karen?

I’m good, Alex. Yeah, it’s not a huge discount, but when you’re buying stuff on the internet all the time, these little discounts do end up saving you dollars.

Hope all is fantastic on your end. Thanks :-)

Alex,

You’re the man with this post. I like to do a ton of keyword research for my products, so the new tools that you are introducing here are going to be a great addition. I need to check out the tool that you introduced at TechnShare as well.

…great looking graphic for your new e-book. Did you make that? I’m excited to see your product unfold. It looks like it will be very useful.

Hey Handsome :)

I hate keywords and research, can you not just do it all for me please!

Really I cannot comment on all these type of posts, wayyyyyy beyond anything I know.

However, I left a comment just so you know I popped by.

You do seem like a keyword research expert and if I need any help I know whose door I will come a knocking on.

Great post for lovers of all things keyword research related, but I miss your Mum and the coconut sprinkles ha ha.

Coconut sprinkles eh?

Does that have anything to do with the time I supposedly called his mother a goat in an alien language?

Never mind. It’s getting way to complicated for me. LOL

Nice to see you out and about, Sally Girl!

These are some awesome free resources Alex. Thank you so much for letting the “cat out of the bag” and sharing them with us.

I am fond of using the Wordtracker SEO Blogger plugin in my Firefox Browser when I’m writing posts in WordPress. I also make extensive use of Google Insights For Search to find timely breakout search terms to include as keywords in my posts.

But now I have a whole new arsenal to check out. Again, bless you for being such a generous blogger and letting us in on all these free tools!

Glad you appreciate the tools and I hope you enjoy playing with them. Thanks for such a generous comment Joella, you’re an Angel. Oh yeah, you knew that. :)

How’s your Nazi editor doing?

Hi Alex! I’m Carolyn, Jeff’s significant other. Otherwise known as his “Significant Editor.” Now known as his “Nazi Editor!”

Weeks ago, Jeff turned over the draft of his book for me (and my sister) to edit. He expected us to edit his grammar and punctuation. We decided to edit the content itself. Since he claimed he was writing for Newbies, we insisted that we should be able to fully understand every step of his installation guide.

This caused Jeffrey great concern. As he put it to me, he was writing for “Newbies,” not “The Utterly Bewildered!”

In Jeffrey’s defense, I must admit that both my sister and I have very little interest, or patience, when it comes to computer technology. And, I must also admit, we frequently call him for technical advice on difficult issues such as “How do we change the background on our desktop?” It’s not surprising that he was concerned about our insistence that WE should understand his directions for WordPress Installation!

In OUR defense…..we really are bright enough to understand technology. We just aren’t fond of it. And why should we bother learning about it…….that’s what we keep Jeffrey for!

This first book has been an amazing experience, on many levels. More difficult than either of us thought, but more gratifying than we expected. And our relationship survived the editorial process — a minor miracle in itself. I’m happy to report that I think the book is good. I’m planning on putting up a blog for my business in a few weeks, all on my own, using Jeffrey’s book, but NO help from him. This will be another first in our relationship.

Wish me luck. I’m thinking of calling it TheUtterlyBewilderedNaziEditor.com !!

Thanks for the encouraging words, Alex. As a matter of fact, I think I’ve conned Jeffrey into letting me post for him on weekends. He sees it as a way for him to get a little sleep. I see it as a way for me to be able to enjoy writing, while letting him deal with all the techie-nerd stuff required to run a blog. Might make me the first “blogger parasite” known to man. Ah….as if viruses weren’t enough to worry about!!

I’ve been using all the Firefox SEO plugins and I love them! They make things go by so much faster. The no follow tool is great, they have a rank checker to see where your sites rank for keywords, they have a PR tool, they can show the page as open source, and much more. I really love it and recommend it to anyone. And its totally free!
