Missed Church? Have some link love instead.

keyword research blog link love - like church but fun

by Alex on August 30, 2010

I’ve been disobeying my own instruction to focus on my link building efforts, and doing a lot of blog hopping lately. Granted it’s still technically link building, but not really. Today isn’t Thursday either, so I can’t exactly call this Threadless Thursday and get away with it either. (I think Sunday is as far from Thursday as you can get actually) But since it is Sunday, and I know a lot of you may have missed church (I know I have – for 32 years) I thought I would lay on the link lovr for you.

I can’t believe how much awesome content I have been finding! Can’t figure out if the standards are improving or if I’m just getting better at finding the good stuff. Either way – I have a few links to share today, and in the usual Keyword Blogger fashion, I will lay on the link love – and of course give you my 2cents first – just in case you suddenly lose the ability to formulate your own opinion.

Pop-Up form survey update

But first – an update from the Pop Up Abomination (thanks Jean ;) ) Poll. Only had 23 votes so far – very poor form, but surprisingly 60% of those who voted said they are not fussed either way. Interesting. Only 26% said they actually hate them so I am seriously considering adding one to my site, but if I do it will NOT be this PUD plug-in. It will also not pop up until you have been on the site for a minute – so that by then you have had the chance to decide whether it was worth your time or not. Anyway, that’s a while away now.

Link building and getting ranked in Google

My first shout out goes to one of my favourite bloggers John Paul Aguair. He is always producing awesome posts and this is no exception. I am in the middle of writing a killer resource showing heaps of sites and services you can use to leverage your content once it’s been published. JP beat me to it :) Maybe not, but he was kind enough to share his secrets with us. Find out how John Paul leverages his content here: My Crazy 7 step plan to promote a blog post. and follow in the footsteps of an already successful blogger.

While you’re there, check out this post titled: 9 Proven steps to improve your Google Ranking’ Where JP takes it one step further and shows you the SEO needed on the page. He combines this with his 7 step plan to promote a blog post and then gives screen shots showing first page ranking. Yes it really is that easy guys, and JP shows you proof. Heck, just sign up to his list while you’re there. You get awesome tips, and he emails you all his best blog posts. Doesn’t try to sell you anything either!

I’ve really been building a steady stream of backlinks to both this blog and my niche sites, and one of the bloggers who has been a wealth of awesome information is Ana Hoffman. Ana is the owner and founder of the Traffic Generation Cafe (a great name I might add) where she writes about generating traffic. She doesn’t write about coffee, but her posts are like a shot of intellectual caffeine all the same :)

I have two great posts from her that I strongly recommend you check out if you are interested in building quality backlinks and not wasting your time with what is not working. The first is a hot tip on where to acquire quality backlinks, I strongly recommend checking it out.  Ana came with the goods on this next one, outlining how important (and easy) it is to know what keywords and posts are getting the most Traffic. Titled Find out who your blog fans are – it is a great read and you should check it out. Oh to hell with it, sign up to her list too! You get an awesome resource on link building and like John Paul, she doesn’t try to sell you anything – just links you to her awesome posts and traffic tips.

Are you ready to laugh?

OK this is not link building, but it’s character building! OK it’s not character building really – but it’s the funniest post I have read – maybe ever, and if you are in need of a good laugh then I seriously recommend you check it out. Joshua is a great writer, and in this post I think he just wanted to jump on the ‘list based post’ bandwagon, but had nothing particularly insightful to list. I am SOOO glad that was the case! Check out his Big Ass List of 101 Things you should not do‘ and turn your brain off for a while :)

Who ordered the Analogy?

I love analogies. They make learning new things and understanding processes so much easier since they paint a physical picture that you can relate to. So when I found this latest post where James King talked about generating traffic and likened it to the transport system in Britain, I was stoked. I really found this post useful when grasping the complexities of traffic to and from a blog – and his analogy was top notch -and I don’t even live in England! Check out his awesome post titled ‘Who else wants a high traffic blog’ and open your eyes to the why of the whole process.

The Keyword Blogger’s final words and HOT TIP

I can’t let you leave without a hot tip of some description so today I wanted to share with you a great tip I picked up from Glen Allsop, the 21 year old owner and founder of ViperChill and all round niche marketing guru.

Want to find out exactly what backlinks are helping a site rank in the search engines? Go to Yahoo Search Engine and Simply type LINK: followed by the URL of the site you are spying on and voila – a list of pretty much EVERY LINK pointing to that site appears.

I hold JP in good regard too. I actually signed up for his course content – I’ve only had a skim over it, but it looks like it’s all there. I’ll probably have an opinion on it at some point lol. But he sure writes some good tips on his site.

I too loved James’ post on link building being like getting to London – fab stuff!

Top tip at the end- I’ll have to check that out

Hi Alex,

We like your thoughts about Pop-Up forms, especially the idea “not pop up until you have been on the site for a minute”. Good idea and so very well said!

We used to use a pop up window on one of our sites and it was really good for increasing conversion rate of our subscribers – surprisingly for us (but true), because we too thought it would only annoy readers, but … it worked!

Hey L&D

That is exactly the conundrum I face! They are annoying – yet they work, hmmm, we’ll see.

I will never outdo the alliteration king, but then I don’t get the advantage of a double name to begin the process :)

Damn you and your sunday selection LOL!

Wow Alex, lots of juicy stuff here! I give you props, for sharing link love (makes me like you even more ;-)

OK, blog hopping, I do the same. I think as long as you provide quality posts at least a couple times a week than it all works out. You still get visits, yet still working feverishly on your marketing.

Thumbs up on the popup thing. It’s all about trial and error and some may like it and some won’t, but you have a BUSINESS to run, so at the end of the day it’s what’s best for your business. Just make sure you share the results with us. ;-)

The link:url thing is great isn’t it? I use this all the time so I can visit the site that are linking to me and reciprocate by commenting on their blogs or just sending a thank you. It’s a bit addicting though. =)

Thanks again…I will be sure to check out all these great posts you suggested. Ciao.

Hey Alex, right I officially hate you (again) for giving me yet more awesome stuff to read.

Seriously brother, there’s some really great stuff you’ve shared here. I know how much work it is to put these posts together, they seem to take forever, but are so rewarding.

Small side comment here. I too was a hater of pop-ups until I realised that although I hate them, It doesn’t actually put me off the site, plus it doesn’t matter what I think, results are they work. Since I’ve been using popup dom, my subscribers have grown by 50%. However, I fully agree with you about the annoying things appearing when you log on, you can actually set it to appear after a set period of time (as I do) but most people don’t bother…

Cheers, Matthew

Great post full of links to some awesome sites. I appreciate you sharing some of the sites you visit.

Also, sorry but I did not vote in your poll (I am so ashamed) on the pop-up forms. I have just created my first pop-up form in aWeber to test it. I would also recommend testing the time from when the reader gets to your page and when the form pops-up. I am also looking at going with just showing the pop-up form just once versus everytime.

What pop-up form are you looking at using?

I use Yahoo frequently to get pages and links for a site, but I’d like to see Yahoo go a little further with the information they give. I know Page Rank isn’t a Yahoo concept, but it would be awesome if they ranked the results by Page Rank.
