Now that you’ve researched and found the optimum keywords, knowing where to actually place them on your page is critical.
This is a quick post that came about as I was (am) in the middle of writing a more detailed post on Keyword Research and Optimization and I realised that these particular thoughts deserved their own post. The tips and methodology I talk about here are all related to on page optimization and as such I have to make the quick disclaimer that without using various off page optimization strategies in conjunction with these techniques your efforts to rank will be in vain.
I talk about the importance of Keyword Research and making sure you are effectively optimizing for relevant and more importantly – attainable Keywords, but where is the best place to put these Keywords once
you have them? Knowing what Google looks for and how much weight it lends to each ‘tag’ or attribute is critical if you are to take full advantage of the Keywords that you are trying to rank for.
Whether you are building squeeze pages, micro niche sites, or you just wrote a killer piece of sales copy and you want organic eyes all over it, knowing this simple order of things can mean the difference between first and second page ranking, and we know how HUGE a difference that can make. So let’s take a look at How Google Works.
The Order in which Google values your site.
- The Domain Name or URL –This is the first thing Google looks for and the attribute to which it lends the most weight. Having your keyword in your domain is the best thing you can do if you want to rank high for that keyword. This is the strategy employed by niche site marketers like myself since it carries all the attributes required for a niche site, that being powerful (SEO) and restrictive. This is the same reason why it is not the practical solution for most bloggers.
- The Subdomain – This is obviously part of the URL but knowing that it is the second most powerful way to optimize your site for a keyword is helpful information to have. Creating Keyword optimized subdomains is a fantastic strategy especially if you have a niche site that promotes a product with many different models.
- The Page Name – The Page name holds the most value in SEO speak outside of the URL itself. The debate still rages as to whether your headlines should compel Google or the people, but I say
“Write a headline for the readers that’s catchy and just totally awesome and then simply change the permalink to include your keyphrase. Easy, done – debate over. Aaah I love wordpress”
- Page Title – OK so this kind of negates my awesome tip that I so arrogantly tagged with quotes, and also in the world of wordpress this is kind of irrelevant now and has been replaced with the H1 tag, Ok, not replaced but it’s the closest thing to it.
- Header Tags (H1, H2 H3 etc) – This is the first place that bloggers should look if they are wanting to optimize a post for Organic eyes. The ability to add these tags with ease is the main reason why the blogging platform has taken off, but I won’t get into that now. When writing a post or building a site be sure to add your keyword in the heading (H1) tag and also include the keyword in various subheadings (H2,H3 etc)throughout the article.
- Outgoing Links – After Google is done with all the tags it looks to the anchor text, or the words that are hyperlinked on your page. Making sure that you add the keywords to outgoing links can only help your onpage optimization, but make sure that the each destination is anchored with RELEVANT keyword text. If you try to create every outbound link as say ‘cheap car insurance’ you would not only confuse the bejesus out of your visitors, you would also not gain any with Google since they would give no value to the link.
- Images – Well technically it gives the value to the Alt Text Tag since the spider only reads HTML but as they say in America (on my TV): ‘WHATEVER’. When adding images to your posts or pages (which you should do) always label the alternative text with your keyword. This is one instance where the image does not have to have anything to do with your keyword. It probably would help, especially if you wanted traffic from Google’s image search but it is not crucial. I always label every image in a post with the keywords I am trying to ‘get’.
- Anchor Text –The hyperlinked text is known as anchor text and in this instance it refers to your internal links. When creating pages it is highly advisable that you link them together with keyword rich hyperlinks. This is especially prudent if you are blogging as over time your overall rank will increase as hundreds of pages interlink with keyword rich anchor text and relevant content. Point to note, when Google is reading your page it only really lends weight to the top half of the body. Putting the anchor text toward the bottom is a waste of time, the internal link really needs to be in the first few paragraphs to hold the most weight.
- The Body Content – Last and certainly not least is the body text itself. This may seem like an unimportant factor in relation to keyword optimization after everything we have done already, but getting it wrong here can undo all the previous efforts. You need to make sure the content is relevant and that your keywords are placed within the text moderately. As a general rule I like to keep it at 15%, (and that figure again, in English: for an average paragraph like the one you are reading the keyword phrase should not appear more than twice. ) As I mentioned in the previous point, Google tends to lend more weight to the top half of the text body so most of your keywords should be centered around that part of the article
Keyword Density
When Google is looking at your page and indexing it based on what it sees as your chosen keywords (which we have now helped it to see) it is also looking at how often the keywords appear. This is known as keyword density and if you have too much you get ignored as spam. As a general rule, keeping it to between 10 and 15% of the total text is a safe bet. This means that if your key word phrase is 4 words long, it should only appear 3 times at most for every 100 words.
Well there you have it, my supposably short post. Hmmmmmm. But, Follow these basic guidelines when optimizing your page for whatever your keyword phrase may be and you are well on your way to seeing much better results in the search engines.
Stay tuned for the epic post that created this one, as well as my free eBook which will include all of this information and much much more.

Hey Alex,
You call this a quick post? This was more informative than any post/article I have read regarding on-page seo/optimisation!
I had a question:
Can squeeze pages rank in the first page of google? because I read that google doesn’t like squeeze pages as they have very little content, so squeeze pages cannot appear in google results…
How true is that? Would you be so kind to elaborate on this?
Thanks,
Nabeel

LOL! Thanks Nabeel. I thought it was going to be a quick post I swear it! Glad you found it valuable, and glad I got back to basics with some SEO posts finally.
In regards to your question, it is true that it is harder for squeeze pages to rank, but that’s not saying they won’t.
IN your case you are promoting CFM so there are hundreds of identical pages out there (even I’ve got one somewhere LOL!) so your page is being seen as duplicate and ignored for the most part. It can still rank if you were to say build a few keyword rich pages behind it optimizing for ‘how to start an internet business’ (yes that is real and its your free gift Nabeel – its the best possible key phrase that you could go for with your CFM page) if you were to actively build backlinks with this phrase and attach a few relevant pages to your site then you should have as much chance at ranking as the next man. Wordpress pages and blogs in general will always rank higher because they naturally lend themselves to SEO, end up with hundreds of keyword rich pages and are updated regularly and as such are fresh in the eyes of the content hungry search engines.
It all comes down to content in the end. Have it and distribute it and you will rank.
Hope that answers the question, see this was supposed to be a quick answer – told you I don;t do quick
Alex, thank you for explaining. I really appreciate it!
Nabeel

Really getting into this eBook which is why I have not been around the blogosphere as much, but I tell you what, in typical Alex fashion it started out at roughly 20 pages of information and its blown out to like 1000! Alex, I can definitely testify to the importance of having your keywords in the your domain name.
For the three keywords in my domain name, I was almost immediately on page 1 of Google, and I’m still there. I’m number 1 on Yahoo and number 9 on Bing. Like Woody Allen says: “90% of success is just showing up [with the right keywords].”
I have about a half-dozen sites with keywords in them that only have a bit of info, and I don’t update them. However, I do get some search engine traffic for them, even though there’s not much there. (I bought them because I may use them down the road and I wanted to develop some longevity for SEO purposes.)

Hey Alex,
Great stuff here. You know the one thing I hate about the H1,H2,H3 stuff, it blows the words up SO BIG in WP that it sort of distorts the post if you ask me. So, I find myself seldom using them. What a dichotomy. ( I have no idea if I even used that word right, but it sounds good for the situation).

I totally agree! I noticed this changed recently, because the H3 tag used to be quite small and just looked like bold text, so it was great for SEO without (as you said) blowing everything out of whack. I thought this was just my site but when I posted on TIP it did the same thing so maybe it’s a thesis thing? Surely that’s configurable? I’ll investigate….
And just because I’m grammatically pedantic – no, as awesome as dichotomy is, it was not really the right context but I’ll let it slide this time (mainly because I can’t find an equally clever word to replace it with.

Hi Alex,
Help. In regards to the domain name. I can’t even get my name Scott Barron as #1 in Google and that is my domain name. Currently I’m #5 in USA. Maybe it takes a lot of time to move up the list?
And this thing: “H1, H2 H3″. Do you write your articles like that?? Isn’t that called writing in HTML when you do all that?
I use a WYSIWYG HTML editor to write my articles. I also have a Wordpress site and it also allows me to write in WYSIWYG. So I have no idea where or what is going where??
Do people still write their articles the old fashioned way?
Thanks for listening to my confusion. Don’t feel bad, Brandon’s latest article confused me too

The Domain name holds the most value in regards to on page SEO but you have to remember that off page SEO still holds a lot more value/weight in the eyes of Google. I for eg have been creeping up the ranks for my name as more and more people link to me using my name as the anchor text, but I still can’t beat that US professor (or the guy on facebook for that matter!?) This shows that the US professor is well known and has hundreds of articles referencing his name all over the place. Only time will be the contributing factor to beating him. Same goes for your situation. Just keep doing what you’re doing and as people link to you with your name your rank will increase. Here Scott Barron, have another one
The H1, H2 etc tags are added during posting. Just use the editor you currently use and you should have the option to highlight the text and specify it as heading 12,3 etc. If not then just add h1 and /h1 tags (can’t add or it will actually tag it)
I still create my niche sites in HTML because most of the page is tables and ads and widgets etc so I prefer to work with the script and not the pretty version. But that’s just me.
Your editor should do it for you but if you can’t figure it out, stop cutting and pasting your head onto random facebook images and learn!
OUCH! That hurts!

Thanks for this very informative post! I’m bookmarking this page as a reference guide to optimize my articles and posts.
I never thought about the outgoing link before, so that’s a good tip I’ll remember to use.
Do you find that in a relatively uncompetitive niche, simply having this kind of “on page” SEO is enough for high rankings or is building back links still necessary? If it’s too long of a question to ask here on a comment space, just ignore this question.
You’re giving so much useful content here on your blog it’s amazing. Tweet tweet!

In a relatively low comp niche market, sure this would be enough to rank, but only for a day or two. Once you are indexed and Google moves on they will find a site with a few backlinks and voila- you’re gone from page 1. I managed to get ranked for a keyword with over 100,000 competing pages with on page SEO alone so it definitely works (see my post titled ‘the power of on page seo’ to see. -can;t be arsed finding it to link for you LOL

Hi Alex,
I would be interested in your thoughts on using social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn to drive traffic to your site. One reason why I think search is still number 1 for sending the right traffic to your blog is that when people search they are looking for something specific. When people come from social media I would guess that the bulk are just clicking on links that their friends posted or are just surfing for the next bit of entertainment.
Cheers

Hey Alex, they are awesome tips that I will be sure to use in as many posts as I can going forward. Now to find a place on my office wall to post them
.
I too am looking forward to your ebook. Will it have a convenient A4 sized poster style summary of the top page ranking elements every page should have? That would not just be over the top it would be beyond my expectations if the ebook included that.
By the way, for those who don’t mind getting under the hood of their blog, you can change the size (and color) of H1, H2, H3 etc by going to your blog Dashboard, clicking on Appearance, then Editor. Your theme style sheet (style.css) will then open in the window and somewhere near the top you will find something like
h1 {font-size:24px; color: #174986 }
h2 {font-size: 20px; color: #087db6; padding: 0 }
h3 {font-size: 18px; color: #055891 }
and so on for each of the different headers. Experiment by changing the height (number before the px) of different headers and see what looks normal enough. Be careful though, changing any of these settings will change that element over your entire site. If you change h3 from 18px to 14px, every occurrence of h3 on your blog will now be 14 pixels in height. (px is short for pixel which is a measure of font height).
You can also play with the colour but that is not as big a problem as the default size selected by your theme author. Only play with the colour if you are really sure you have the skills and you don’t like the existing colour set by the theme author. The colour is given by the #174986 value and represents the amount of RGB (red, green, blue) mixed together to give a certain colour. The values are represented in hexadecimal and if that word is new to you, it may be best to leave colour alone for now while you get the font size just right for your blog.
Cheers for now, Michael

Oh, by the way, as a general rule of thumb, before editing your site’s style.css file, make a full copy of it in a text file and save it on your desktop in case something goes wrong. When you first open your style.css page, copy all by clicking anywhere in the text of the style.css file, press control-A then control-C (on a PC, not sure on a mac), open a new text document (notepad will do) then paste (control-V) the style.css contents. Save it to your desktop.
You could also do this using your FTP program if you are familiar with that. Make a local copy of style.css as a backup. If something goes horribly wrong when editing the H1, H2, H3 sizes, just overwrite everything in the live style.css with the backup and start again.

Now we’re talking optimization!
I’ve been recently looking into (and I think everyone could benefit) synonyms for your keywords as well.
Not everyone is going to type in the exact keyphrase and by reaching further by using an occasional synonym, you can capture these people as well.
For example: some my type in “blue sofas” while others may type “blue couches” both are essentially the same in many minds even if they have small differences. If you can capture that traffic as well, you can help inform and drive people.
Once you get the idea of on-page optimization down pat, you’ll find it easier to create content without having to think it through. Placing your keywords will come naturally

Very creative post title Alex, and very informative post
You pretty much covered every SEO aspect that I can think of, so it’s hard to add anything. I guess the only thing I can add is watch out who you link to, because you can actually LOWER your rankings in Google by linking to websites that Google has marked as “spam”.
It shouldn’t be hard considering you have complete control of WHO you link to, so it’s just a matter of watching what sites your plug-ins are linking to and such.

Headlines can definitely prove a problem, as pleasing both visitors and search engines is sometimes a tough task. In the quest of optimizing those, I’m often spending more than an hour until I come up with something that’s good for both sites. Great tips Alex!
By the way I just discovered your blog and it seems that there’s a lot of useful information to read. Will keep up with you.

Hey Dan,
Yeah you got it right there brother! I think there is probably more debate over the SEO vs. the People title than anything else online. I just write a compelling one for the people and change the permalink for Google.
Sorted, done, no problems.
Thanks for your comments Dan, much appreciated mate.

Hey Olgae,
My you have a lot of questions.
That’s OK, let’s work through them shall we – because sometimes it’s easier to start at the beginning, you know ‘take one game at a time’ and other cliches like that
Well I take special care of my keyword density and I make sure that it doesn’t exceed 2-4%.
Am I doing right?

So long as it does not come at the expense of the actual writing itself, then that is definitely fine. I stick to around 6% so ….. hmmmm LOL!
Thanks for stopping by Karan
