In the Blogosphere there are thousands of mini communites formed around blogs, forums, and various online membership sites, and within these communities there are relationships that are formed and ties that are made. I absolutely love it, and I know most of the people in the communities that I am a part of would feel the same. I know this is so because we link to each other and help promote a good article or a resource and this is awesome. But you know what, there still isn’t enough love in the room and we only have ignorance to blame.
Click Here for an interesting point.
One of the most powerful forms of Offpage SEO is the text that is contained within the link pointing to another page. This is known as the anchor text and although we don’t know exactly how Google works, we know enough to realise that if you have a page about roses and there are thousands of links pointing to it that all say ‘beautiful roses’ then chances are it will rank quite well for that phrase (provided all those links don’t come from a few sites about racing cars or something but you get the point) One of the most interesting forms of proof for this fact is Adobe.
Do a search for CLICK HERE. It’s OK, I’ll wait. Now the reason why Adobe are ranked first (and they pretty much always have been and will be too) is because around the globe there are millions of websites that use Adobe software and under their player will be a little link saying ‘don’t have Adobe? Click Here to download it.
See How Powerful the Anchor text is?
Adobe and the ‘click here’ have shown us the power of anchor text on SEO and the reason I shared this story with you is because I wanted to make sure you shared that love when linking to your fellow blogger. If you are going to write ‘check out this great post by Alex on how to use Twitter effectively’ then make sure you hyperlink the How to Use Twitter bit and not the Great Post by Alex bit. As excited as I am that you have linked to me and provided that wonderful feedback, ranking well for ‘Great Post’ is not what I am ultimately trying to achieve. (maybe if I was in the fence building niche that would be OK
)
I’m not saying to go and research the optimum keywords on behalf of your fellow blogger, I just want to remind you of the power of anchor text and the cumulative effect it can have on your search engine rankings. You’re already sharing the love anyway so why not make it worth their while.
Everyone wants to rank first for their own name.
Don’t they? The reason I mention this is because I was talking with Scott Barron (
) recently about how I could cover spots 3 thru 9 in Google for my name but could never get first and second and he started complaining about how bad it is when your name is the same as a footballer or someone. My (not so) secret quest is to get Scott ranked for his name and the only way to do that is with consistent links to his site using his name as the hyperlinked anchor text. With that in mind, I will always try to make an effort to hyperlink the bloggers name back to their about or home page.
What time is it? It’s Keyword Rich link loving time!
Now for some real life examples, and a blatant excuse for me to spread some Link Love of my own.
If the post title is obviously already optimised then I will link that instead, otherwise I will link to what the article is about. Since most bloggers only write about what is in their particular niche the cumulative effect of linking to them with niche related keywords can only be a good thing for their SEO in the long term.
- AN AWESOME ANTNALOGY
My first shout out has to go to Anna Haller and her awesome post linking the qualities needed to Succeed Online to Ants. ‘Do you wANT to succeed?’ was a clever post title too. (and yes she gave me kudos for the idea and no I am not linking to her due to feeling the reciprocity itch – I just thought it was a wicked analogy and a well written post)
- YOU NEED TO GIVE IN ORDER TO RECEIVE
Jess Webb who has an aptly name surname and a totally awesome domain name with Jessilicous.com wrote an amazingly detailed article titled ‘7 Reasons why You Should Give Away Your Best Stuff for Free‘ and covers every reason I could think of and then some. It also indirectly provides some great insight into internet marketing and sales in general and is really well constructed.
- LIST BUILDING & EMAIL MARKETING
Jonathan Beebe at MakeMoneyOnlineWork.biz took emotion out of the equation and gave us the job quitting numbers we need. His post ‘The Numbers You Need to Quit Your Job’ is a great analysis of the online marketing world and provides a little insight into the numbers behind the power of list building and email marketing, and trust me when I tell you that Jonathan knows a thing or two about that!
- ADWORDS SIMPLIFIED
Brandon Connell at his namesake.com is constantly coming up with little gems of posts and this is no exception, in fact this is brilliant. Somehow he has managed to take the complexities of How to Make Money with Google Adwords and make it look quite easy in his post ‘Profits aren’t a trick, they’re a numbers game.’
- SOCIAL MEDIA & FACEBOOK
Sam Schuurman aka SocialSammy over at Ithnk.com is my go to guy for anything related to Marketing through Social Media and he has gone EPIC with his latest offering. Anyone want to know how to setup a Facebook Business Page? Sam has gone all out with this amazing resource aptly titled ‘All the Resources You Need to Start A Pimping Business Facebook Page’. I highly recommend you bookmark this for if and when you decide to take the plunge into the world of Facebook Marketing.
- ALL ROUND INSPIRATION
Karen Ruby over at ameaningfulexistence.com writes about inspiration and insight that can be related to just about any facet of life and business. Karen also writes for theInfoPreneur Team and her latest post is just awesome as it talks about something that I think everyone online should listen to. The Post is (well optimized I might add Karen)titled ‘Seven Serious Ways that you Can Simplify your Life’ and the fact that she kept the list down to just seven shows she is really serious about helping us do just that!

Aww, shucks, thanks for the mention, Alex! I am incredibly honored to be mentioned in such a great list!
Good points on the anchor text in links too, this is something I need to pay more attention to. And I need to link out to other people more!
I’ve been diving into the community, though, and meeting some great folks that I’m looking forward to sharing with my readers!

Hey Jess,
My pleasure, that was a wicked post you wrote so it deserved a mention.
I think anchor text is single handedly the most important aspect of SEO so if you can get better keyword anchor text then in time you’ll be laughing.
Definitely giving link love is a good thing and (hint hint) if you link to me could you perhaps hyperlink ‘keyword research blog’ or something to that effect?.
Awesome, and thanks for the comments Jess
That really is the key to showing up for any keywords… Anchor text! It has to be right. So many websites point to you with stupid links, stupid words and even links that don’t even work, they just lead people to your 401 page. Lovely!
At least we can control our own internal links. That can be powerful stuff.
P.S. One trick I’ve seen that works well: Ask your readers to link to you using a specific term that you want to show up for. Most of your friends with related niches will. All you have to do is ask!

Richard mate,
OMG tell me about it – sheeeesh! I have been linked to dozens of times with Check out this great post from Alex Whalley, but they hyperlink the bloody ‘great post’ bit RAAAH LOL!
I was actually thinking of having a standard request that asked people to link to me with ‘keyword research blog‘ whenever possible so that in time I could benefit from the rank. Thanks for reminding me to do that.
In fact, I think I will edit this very post and add that toward the end.

Hey Alex,
Always nice to read your posts. The importance of anchor linking cannot be ignored especially nowadays looking at how competitive IM is becoming. The good thing for us is 95% don’t know about this stuff.
However as more and more people sees the importance of keywords anchor text, the on page and off page seo will have to be done to perfection to get significance with SE presence. Anchor text linking on a post itself, like you have done, helps a lot with Yahoo called contextual linking. But it’s also good not to overdo it, as page rank bleeding can become a factor, affecting the page ranking with Google. Best to keep it balanced.
I actually like Jonathan Beebe posts. I met him through your blog. Well I am watching Anna Haller’s progress pretty closely since I met her from Alex Jeffreys 3.0. She’s another hard worker and doing great building relationships.
Until next time my friend.

Hi Alex,
Really appreciated this post as I always thought re anchor links, that as long as the term you were wanting to be ranked for was included in the phrase, it didn’t matter if other words were included.
However, after reading your post I should only hyperlink the actual term and forget any other words around it. Hopefully I now understand this a little better.
You know if someone had told me 3 moths ago that when I started my blog you better make sure you understand and apply SEO, back linking strategies, article and video marketing campaigns, PPC and Adwords etc. etc I would have been thinking that they are away with the pixies!! What would all this stuff have to do with writing a few blog posts?
Unbelievable what a new comer has to learn..and in a hurry in order to survive. But thanks to a good coach and blogs like your in our blogging community, bit by bit you come to terms with this and even enjoy the learning in the process. Thanks again mate for a really good post…AGAIN!

Hey Peter,
Actually you thought correct my friend, and I apologise if my post made this unclear. Each and every keyword and phrase within the sentence still holds rank juice with the incoming hyperlink, it just won’t have as much power as it would if you hyperlinked ONLY the keywords you were targeting.
SO i guess we are both right. Now I have confused myself.
I totally agreee with your comment about Blogging and how much there is to learn and how multi faceted it all actually is, but that’s why blogging is the best medium to learn it in I reckon.
Thanks so much for those kind words and I am glad that I am providing value where it counts.
Take care Peter and chat soon my friend

Hey Alex,
It’s interesting to read how powerful your anchor text can be. It’s something I’m trying to ensure I do properly on my sites.
I’d be interested to here how your quest for Scott is going, and what other measures you’re taking. Unfortunately when you Google my name I’m competing against an NHL player, a musician, a former cyclist amongst other things.
Cheers,

Yeah I don’t think I will ever get Scott ranked but it’s fun to keep up the effort of hyperlinking his name each time. I think I may start the same thing with you my Friend Mark Bell because (you poor bastard) competing against those you mentioned is going to be make things hard.

Alex, this is a lesson I have recently learned. When I want to hook up a blogging friend, I make sure the anchor text reflects the SEO target of a particular post (at least to the best of my ability from reading that post).
I have gotten some wonderful feedback and made some great friends this way, but I don’t do it simply for the reward. If I feel something is good enough to link to, then it is something my readers will enjoy, and I want to serve the best I can.
Cheers on a great post.

Hi Alex, I have the problem that there is an actor with the same name as me. However, I own my own domain (www.matthewneedham.co.uk) which links straight to my about page.
In Google.co.uk I rank no.4 thanks to Linkedin, the blog http://www.bigredtomatocompany.co.uk comes in at number 5. I’d love to be 1 and 2 but, I think my blog needs to get bigger and have more site links.
Whatever it means, I have a Google Page Rank of 4 now, so hopefully that will improve over time and further move me up the lists.
I think this is a really clever post, explaining the technique then sharing the love with some examples. Very clever!

Hi Alex,
Great post, although I have known about anchor text for a while, never really used it, not to any great effect anyway, mainly because I’ve always stank at anything to do with SEO, will certainly start doing linking a bit more now, especially to people’s names, great idea.

I confess that somewhere in the back of my head I think about anchor text in my posts, but it’s usually just when I am about to attach a hyperlink to the word here (I still do that occasionally).
I like the examples you presented. I’m going to put a sticky note on my monitor for the next two weeks with the phrase “Use Great Anchor Text” on it. We’ll see if it sinks into my brain.
P.S. On a lark, I did a Google search on “Great Post,” and you’re not there.
I did find a great post (ironic, I know) that I had missed under the “Results from people in your social circle” section.

Alex,
If one were to link to a particular post on your website, one would know what anchor text to use as your specific post would drive the selection of anchor texts.
But if YOU were to guest post for someone, what anchor text would you choose to refer back to the main URL of his site. I ask as I seem to struggle with what anchor texts to use for guest posts I do.
Many thanks in advance. As a side note, do you love cricket ?
Twitter: buildrankprofit
October 21, 2010 at 1:40 AM
Hey mate,
Not sure if I read this right, but I assume you mean this scenario: You guest post on blog B, then you write a post on your own blog linking to your guest post on blog B right?
If this is the case then you clearly want to optimise that phrase for whatever the article itself was targeting in the first place?
I am thinking I misread the question or got confused because this seems to obvious.
And no, I don’t like cricket (oh no).. I LOVE IT (yeah)
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Damn – now that song is stuck in my head (I LIKE JAMAICA!!)
Alex,
Sorry for confusing you but here is the scenario. You own site A (you write about babies) and let’s assume you know of 15 niche keywords for this site. To promote your site, you go to site B and do a guest post (on say high chairs for babies). So, there is an opportunity you have to link back to your site A (not a particular post on A but to the main domain) from B using some anchor texts – which of these 15 keywords should one choose on the anchor texts ? Assume all 15 keywords are equally important.
Twitter: buildrankprofit
October 21, 2010 at 12:22 PM
Your examples are hitting very close to home LOL hmmm……
I think so long as you know the 15 keywords you are targeted in the first place then so long as you use one of them and vary this up each time.
But choosing the one most applicable simply comes down to looking at the content of both the article you wrote AND the content on the site in general. The more relevant your phrase is to the topic of the site, the more power it will carry.
Hope this helps
Anchor text is one of the most overlooked elements in a solid SEO link building strategy. However, I believe that it might be the single most important element in achieving high rankings in the search engine result pages.
