Starting an online business is a longer and harder process than starting one offline. This is a fact.
If you wanted to open an Italian Restaurant, for example, then once you have done your preliminary homework and it’s time to invest, there’s only one or two avenues you can take. You simply borrow the money from the bank, invest in a property, invest in staff and go about opening your restaurant. When you are online things are a little different. When you have decided on your business model/plan and you are ready to invest, there is still a gamut of options available to you, and a myriad of directions you can take this. The information available on the web is overwhelming and can stop many an entrepreneur from ever getting started as they are bombarded with options and ‘new systems’ that can do what they were going to do, but faster and better!
So how do we get through this process and still come out optimistic?
The key to beating information overload and your inner demons is not in the mindset or getting yourself the ‘winning attitude’ to succeed. The problem I see is that too many bloggers talk about the importance of getting into the right mindset and having a can do attitude. “you need to think like a millionaire before you can become one” BULLSHIT!!
How can you think like a millionaire if you have never experienced even a modicum of success online??
People have it all the wrong way around. Why spend all this time listening to self hypnosis and getting all positive about your venture when you could spend the same time actively promoting and learning and building your business. Do this and guess what?! When you make that first big sale, or even that first dollar- you will INSTANTLY GAIN A WINNING MINDSET.
But the process we employ to grow our business is of utmost importance!
A friend of mine was recently telling me about a class he is taking at his local gym called the ‘Couch to 5 Kilometres’ (about 3 miles). He was telling me about how it’s a really good class to build your fitness levels and ultimately improve your health, but I could not help but notice how it is also a really good metaphor that I can apply to the way I build my online empire.
Baby Steps!
Would you try and go from being a couch potato to running 5 Kilometres in one go? NO. You would obviously start training. In order to run 5 kilometres straight you need to work your way up to this point. Maybe on day one you would run 100m and walk another 100. Then on day two you might run 250m and walk another 250. The point is baby steps. There is no way you could go from being a couch potato to running 5 kilometres without going through a process to work up to this point. (don’t believe me, just watch the Biggest Loser!) So why is it that we try to take this same approach to our online business venture.
Your new business is a new direction, it’s like going from being a couch potato to being a marathon runner. In order to reach this point you need to set goals that are in bite size chunks, you need to apply realistic expectations to your goals and stick with them until they are achieved. What this means is that you need to give yourself a break. I set a goal to do 4 hours of work everyday. When I failed to achieve this I got down on myself and ironically got even less done as a result.
Why did I fail to meet this expectation? Because it was not realistic! (I was trying to get off the couch and run 5 Kilometres!)
So what can I take away from this and how can I apply it to my circumstance?
In order to achieve success we need to FOCUS and WIN
FOCUS = Follow One Course Until Successful
This is a very powerful acronym that has been applied to this word and one that I remember whenever I see it written. It’s quite straight forward and takes all the variables out of the equation (and we know how many variables there are online). Quite simply, follow one course of action until you see success with it, then use this success to motivate and leverage the continued growth of your business.
WIN = What’s Important Now
This is as simple as it is beautiful. You want to win? Then focus on what is important now. If what you are currently involved with does not directly lead to building your business then why are you doing it?
Follow the link to my next post where I talk in more detail about SMART goals and the ‘SMALL WINS’ strategy that my business coach and I have developed to help me achieve my dreams that much faster.
What are your thoughts? Do you have any tips or strategies that you employ to help manage your business and yourself?

Hi Alex,
This topic closely resembles my latest post What Kind of Boss Are You?
Who are we to hold accountable for taking the baby steps and making sure we are moving in the right direction.
You bring up an interesting perspective. You’re right, we need to start slow and progress. I think the reason most of us fail at that (initially) is because we think, “Hey, I can work full time at a company, this isn’t any different.”
And we forget, how far from the truth that is. Being my own boss is my worst enemy! Working from home is so different. One of my fellow bloggers has a strict rule. “No Bra Wednesdays”
and “No pants Fridays”!! And it works for her.
I tried, but didn’t get much accomplished. I must remember “baby steps”.
Cheers!

First let me get the image of you wearing a bra out of my head….(calls therapist) Ok, … You put an interesting perspective on this post, SCOTT’S BACK!! and I love it. Never brought that angle into it, but totally agree that going from the office to the home office is a huge challenge, and finding ways to stay accountable to yourself and stay focused is a hurdle you must overcome. Maybe you have given me another post idea? (unless you steal it first)
Forget the bra, what about no pants friday? Now that’s something I don’t want to picture.

I made a mistake. She calls it Topless Wednesday.

Alex,
Beautifully constucted post here! Yes, all that mindset stuff can sometimes lead people into thinking that they can “manifest” things without actually doing anything. Its the action that matters. I guess if you have a big enough reason why you’re doing it in the first place, taking action becomes easier.
Alex, how did you come up with those acronyms? Totally awesome. F.O.C.U.S so important. Infact, in trialling that right now and hope to see what the results have been in a couple of weeks time.
Your writing is inspiring me everytime I see your rss feed pop up in my reader, cos I just need to come and check out your Yoda wisdom. Catch up soon man.

That’s awesome Bailey! Yoda wisdom haha! “Hmmmm Teach you I will” So good to get that feedback and glad you’re enjoying the posts. Yeah I came across taht acronym a few years back but it has served me well when I need a reminder of what focus actually means.
Hey Alex, this is a great point that you brought up. I think millionaires can serve as a great example to learn from, but ultimately we can’t just suddenly “think” like them and expect the same kind of results. This is sort of why when The Secret came out, I was kind of skeptical of its concept.
I think progress is what matters, and we get progress by actually doing. It doesn’t matter if it’s small baby steps like you say, as long as those steps are giving up momentum and helping us reach our goals.
Thanks for this post. I love the analogy of the marathon you gave here and also noticed how skinny the arms of that lady is in this post!

LOL! So the lesson here is to work harder and eat more…?! hee hee, thanks for your comments Hulbert, they are always really insightful and valuable. Always a pleasure to read
Some good points here. Not sure I agree starting an online business is easier than starting an offline, but I see where you are going with it. I do agree that we need to become successful down one path first then branch out. Nice job on the acronyms. Did you make those up? How do you get a business coach? Man, no wonder I’m not a millionaire yet, I’m trying to do this on my own.

Hey Mike, always good to see you here! I think it’s probably easier to start a business online in terms of risk but in relation to information and options, the online world is certainly a trickier one to navigate in the early stages. In regards to the business coach, my best mate is doing a business degree and is starting his own business coaching business – I am his trial client!
The acronyms were not mine (unfortunately!)
I love common sense! Now, if only I would have had some of that when I started out I could have saved myself a lot of headaches. Focusing our energy, education, etc., on the step we’re at is so powerful, yet we’re often so anxious to hurry on to the next thing that we ruin our chance to build something strong and sturdy.
Looking forward to your next installment!

You have shared a very valid point here Alex. To succeed with our goals we need to make a move at each time. No result will come by just thinking of success.

Hey Walter, thanks for stopping by man. I like the way you have summarised the entire post “no result will come by just thinking of success” I LIKE IT
“Some people dream of success, others wake up and work hard to achieve it”.
Ok motivational slogans aside, I like how you sum things up, especially in paragraph 3. Taking small steps to learn how to apply online strategies to me seems a lot more sensible than listening to to every instalment of “Personal Power” by Tony Robbins.
I’m about to put a post up on iThnk about incorporating some of the tips above into growing our business. Cheers for the insight.

Hahaha well summised Andy! I spent a year listening to every bloody Tony Robbins CD Too! And all it got me was depressed because I was uber motivated and doing nothing LOL!!
Good to see you over this way Andy, and thank for taking the time to comment. Looking forward to the new post on ithnk.
