I finally finished moving my sites, including alexwhalley.com across to Hostgator. Why do these processes have to be so confusing?! I may as well have attempted to land my blog on the moon and in fact there were times during the move when I seriously wondered if maybe I had successfully managed to do this! It sure as shit wasn’t where it was supposed to be that’s for sure.
As I write this post my email account (alex@alexwhalley.com) is still up there somewhere, perhaps wondering aimlessly around one of
the craters on the north face and until I can get home and reconfigure the mail servers, will continue to wander without direction. I will have the mail account sorted by the end of the day and I thank all of you that have had their emails bounced back. I also apologise for the fact that I know a lot of you have had comments disappear into the ether as they were left whilst the domain name servers were being updated.
My first impressions of HostGator.
Firstly let me state that there are no affiliate links here and this is not a paid review, in fact it’s not really a review at all since I have been utilising their services for all of 2 weeks now.
My first impressions of HostGator are only positive ones, and I cannot speak highly enough of the support system they have in place. Hostgator provide a 24 hour live chat window that has been of immeasurable help to me whilst I struggled with the technical side of moving all my sites and databases etc. The longest I had to wait for a support representative to come online was 4 minutes! Amazing, especially when you want something fixed NOW. They also have an excellent email support service that will get back to you within 24 hours everytime. So far I have had no downtime on my sites, but since they have been running on Hostgator servers for all of 5 hours now, it’s not really a very good gauge for your reference. Only time will tell if their 99% uptime guarantee stands true, but considering my last host went down daily, the standard has been set quite low.
All in all I am very happy with the smoothness of the transition and the assistance provided by HostGator each and every step of the way and I would have no hesitation in recommending their services.

So Where to now?
Alexwhalley.com is heading into a very exciting stage of it’s life and as I type this I am sitting at IBM on the last day of work. This is not only the last day of this job, it is the last day I will ever ‘have to’ wear a suit, it is the last day I will ever have to work a 9 – 5 job and it is the last day for excuses. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. Stay tuned.

Hey Alex,
Congrats getting your new hosting set-up. And with the last day of you job!
What was the old hosting company you were using? I’m using godaddy right now and I haven’t had problems but I also don’t know what problems there are to have with a hosting company.
Peace,
Darren L Carter

Hey Darren, thanks mate! Yeah it was nicely timed, almost a sign. My old hosting was offered free with a membership program I was a part of but since I no longer utilised any of their services and the hosting was not exactly 100% I decided to move. I have a no. of sites so even though Hostgator did most of it, it was still a major headache as all my sql databases changed names!

Congratulations on moving yourself out of the traditional work force, Alex, and moving your hosting too! Lots of changes going on with you, but they all look like positive ones from where I’m standing.

Thanks Jean! Yeah it’s all very exciting down here, and the way everything has happened all at once is eerily positive if you ask me. I’m ready to kick things into a higher gear from here on in…

Hey Alex, you should have put your affiliate link it wouldn’t have bothered me, I don’t mind if people review a service and give their link, even if they have only used it for 2 weeks.
I host with Hostgator and I would say I am about 95% happy with them, only because the past month has seen some downtime, which annoyed me greatly as I was in a traffic competition!
But all in all I am happy with them and nothing has annoyed me so much to switch hosting.
Hope you last day goes smoothly and you head straight out to the garden and burn your suit, in a controlled manner of course.

Hey Sally! Yeah lol the only reason I didn’t put the link in is because I just couldn’t be bothered! the suit has been taken to the drycleaners (figured after wearing it dirty for three years I should store it in a clean state (what the?)
Really looking forward to the next few months and years to come!

I pay $99 a month for my own server. Before that, I bartered with the company for a couple of years. It’s the only way to go…

Don’t think I could afford $99 a month for hosting, especially now that Im not working fulltime! Plus with the exchange rate at the moment that would equate to like $6700. OK so not really, but it feels like it compared to the 93c to the $1 we got up to.
What does the ‘ol battleaxe, I mean Christine think of you being home all the time?
My neighbors work from home (well he does and shes a housewife). She said it was a difficult transition because they had too much together time. Like the old saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder.
They fight a lot about their kids. Now that he’s home she expects him to help. But he says even though he’s home he still is trying to work 40 hours a week. I understand where he’s coming from.
Anyway, congrats on switching to HostGator! I haven’t received the error message saying your site was down & that’s good news!

My wife is always complaining that I never leave. She claims that time apart would improve our relationship. I just think she’s trying to get rid of me

My wife works from home anyway, but has been on maternity leave for over a year now (2 children) so I think it will be interesting. This is her space, especially since she has worked from home for the last 7 years – I better look out.

Wow, you had the courage to make the leap into the unknown?!
Please can I have some of your courage as I sit here at my day job waiting for the weekend to start and already dreading having to come to work on Monday?
Did I miss the post about how you accomplished all this, especially the finances, or is that an upcoming post?
Congratulations!

Yeah the Metamorphosis post, but basically I have found a part time job working from 5am until 9am 5 days a week, the pay is almost the same and it leaves me with 5 full days to build this business.
My biggest struggle to date has been not having large blocks of time to accomplish things. Now things will be different. Look out blogosphere!
I’m sure HostGator will be just fine. I’ve never used them but it seems like many people do. You must be really using that chris farrell membership if you’re quitting your job.

Just cancelled the membership actually as I was not utilising any of the services there. I did however get in contact with a few members who I have since formed close relationships with, one in particular used to live really close to me and as such has taken me under his wing and is mentoring me.
Congrats on getting rid of the suit for good! As for Hostgator, I have had very positive experiences with them. Only a few problems ever and I’ve been with them for over 6 months now. They always respond super fast! Transferring can be a pain though, I had so many sites to move over when I made the transition to Hostgator!

Hey Ruth! Good to see you again and thanks for the congrats. I am looking forward to not ‘having to’ wear it again (I may learn enough SEO online to leverage to an offline venture somewhere down the track) I know what you mean about the move. I had ummm… a number of sites to move and just ended up paying them to do it for me! Probably a good business decision in the long run.
I haven’t used HostGator personally, but I did include them in a comparison when I was reevaluating hosts wayyy long ago. HostGator looked like a quality service to me on first impressions but price eventually beat out and I ended up going with Bluehost.
Would be good to see an indepth review from you here going over your experiences with HostGator sometime in the future Alex.

Hey Josh.
If I do a review later and they continue how they have thus far, it’s going to end up sounding like a paid version, because I think I’m in love with them at the moment. I have had a few niggling issues with this site since the move and they have been there helping to fix it every step of the way! Can only say great things of the service. I’m in Australia and it’s still instant support! (I know it’s a global village and all but still)
Thanks for stopping by Josh!
Oh and congrats on the last day mate, you must be stoked!!!
I’m supremely jealous.

Cheers Josh! Yeah I’m super stoked but of course there’s no more excuses any more! (that’s a bit daunting)
Thanks again man.
Hey Alex, I love the last quote, but that’s not why I stopped to comment. Congratulations on quitting the ‘rat race’. Awesome news my friend, good luck to you!

Hi Alex, congratulations on the move! I also switched to HostGator this month (for my website MMO Work) but I’ve used them in the past for other websites with great success–even some of my more high-traffic ones. I’ve never had a major problem, and yes, their support system is top-notch.
