Thinking outside of the IM Box

Thinking outside of the box of internet marketing

Venturing outside the online marketing box

In order to survive as an affiliate marketer, or more specifically, a person who is just starting out in affiliate marketing you really need to think outside the box. Too many newbie marketers come into a system, membership site –program  – So gung ho about the prospects of financial freedom and working from home that they fail to ever see the bigger picture.

I won’t continue to rant about the reasons why because I have a habit or rambling a little too much (I’m going to make a great octogenarian!) but rather, here is a list of questions to ask yourself. Questions that hopefully by asking, will drag you out of the box you are in and help you assess the bigger picture and seethe marketing landscape for what it is.

•    What is it that I am promoting/selling?

(Chances are since you are new to the online marketing game, you will be promoting a copy paste squeeze page to build a list of some kind)
-Is it Unique?  (if not, which is probably the case since its a copy and paste page – how can you approach the marketing in a unique way?)
-Is it in demand in your niche?
-Is it helping to solve a problem?

•    Who am I currently promoting this to?

Look at the ‘special report’ or ‘free gift’ that you are giving away as incentive to get their email opt ins. Is it something that your target audience wants, or even better – Needs?
Example:
-Am I promoting a ‘how to get started online’ page to an established Internet Marketing audience?
-Am I promoting traffic generating techniques to an audience of complete newcomers?
This leads to the next question to ask yourself:

•    How is my target audience going to benefit from my ‘free report’?

Granted this question is intrinsically linked to the last one, but it helps define your vision.
Look at your offer from the point of view of your prospects – target audience.
It’s the purpose, the benefit, the reason why, the what’s in it for me statement that gives your offer meaning to a visitor – So align this to their situation/circumstance/ needs.

•    Where am I promoting this offer?

Aside from the usual question of how you are driving traffic – what methods you are employing to generate visitors –which in and of itself is another 7 million word article, you need to assess where you are promoting now that you are standing outside of the box and looking at the bigger picture.
Are the traffic techniques you are using aligned to:
a)    Your target market?
b)    Answering their questions or resolving their issues?

Thinking outside the box- in a nutshell

Create a profile of the type of subscribers/buyers/visitors that you are targeting
•    Find out what questions they are asking and what problems they are facing
•    Find out where they generally go to get these answers

- NOW SIMPLY-
•    Provide solutions to these questions/problems
•    Be where you know they will be before they get there.

These are definitely great tips and ones that people should really pay attention to. I see way too many people think they’re going to hit it big after a couple of months. There is a .00000000001% chance that you will but don’t quit your job just yet.

The truth is you CAN make it as an affiliate but it takes a lot of time and patience. I always say when you’re starting out to NOT focus on the affiliate program you’re promoting but rather focus on your visitors and generating quality traffic. People sometimes concentrate too much on finding ways to throw an affiliate link here and there or putting ads in the wrong places that it can drive people away.

If you’re finding it too difficult AND you really want to do this part time or for a living invest in some education and it’ll take you a long way.

Thanks!
