We all want better lifestyles, more time with family and friends, right? Online business and working from home is an appealing escape route from the 9 to 5. Many Internet marketers are seductive in their approach of emotional conditioning. The manipulation of living life by: your own means; making millions of online in record time is only one half of the equation.
There are countless: articles; blog posts; videos and marketing material that glamourise working from home as the best way of generating income. The majority of their content is developed to sell products; resources and their ideologies, tailored to make them money.
In this article, I will expose some of the hidden obstacles that are frequently overlooked whilst working from home. Many claim that setting up a business is straightforward. The reality is business requires a great deal of time, effort, determination and persistence that must be delivered.
In March, 2010, I was working for an employer. The company was making job cuts across many departments and employees were naturally worried. One late Friday afternoon with the weekend around the corner, me and my colleagues received individual e-mails regarding a meeting from a senior manager. That would take place on Tuesday afternoon. Uncertain about the agenda, we had our assumptions it was redundancy related. Redundancy is an emotional game of limbo.
We hear so many stories about people making six figures or even a seven figure income from a laptop in just 2 hours a day. It’s natural to be curious. We all want more money and the nicer things in life, right?
Make millions now! It’s complete garbage. If it’s so easy how come everybody is not doing it? Why are people struggling to make money online?
The realities of working from home
Self-employment means you own a job.
You are now the captain of the ship. You’re responsible for the outcome of your business. Being your own boss requires motivation, dedication, responsibility and the determination to succeed. All these qualities don’t guarantee you’ll be successful. The economy is a vital cog in your business.
- Is there a demand for what you do?
- How many other people are offering the same services as you?
- How much value do you provide for your customers?
Lots of free time! It’s bogus. You’ll find out that you’ll be working longer hours, towards tighter deadlines and learning as you progress.
A business can strain your relationships
Many successful business people apply lots of time into their ventures. That can lead to neglecting other areas of our lives, especially with people we love and care about. Many business people I know have a string of failed relationships due to the victimisation of self-employment.
A successful life should be a balanced life. Business owners realise how difficult creating money can be and have no alternative to work longer and harder, to earn a wage that can be easily earned in the 9-to-5.
You’re constantly searching for the next meal ticket
Finding new clients and networking is the blood flow of your business. Without networking your business can’t grow. Networking should be applied in every aspect of your life. I’m certain you’ve heard the phrase: “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. We get business from people. Networking with people is how we make money.
Collecting money from people is very difficult. In a recession finding money to pay people especially in business is treacherous. If business “A” cannot pay business “B”, then business “C” suffers. Many businesses are under the domino effect. Cash flow is another lifeline.
What should you do
Being an employee is a smart decision, because you’re guaranteed a regular income. Many people believe that working for them is the answer to a successful lifestyle. My experience can only provide you with decisions.
The best way to develop a successful income is in your spare time. We all want more money, but use the resources you’ve got whilst being employed you’ll have a better chance of success.
Once your online business exceeds your job’s income then consider going self-employed. Never have all your eggs in one basket. Listen to reason and logical. Don’t always buy what these Internet Marketers preach you, because they’re in the industry of making money just like you!
I lost my job, to learn that valuable lesson. Working in business is very hard and you’ll become obsessed with money.
There is a lot more to life than slogging your guts out for a pittance. Be smart and develop an online business steadily and gradually in your spare time whilst being employed.
An extra income never hurts. If you get made redundant you have another lifeline. Once you’re made redundant your bosses don’t care. Look after number one at number one because no one else well.
Now it’s your turn
Have you lost your job or been made redundant? If so, you’ve got all the more opportunity to develop an online business, have you started developing one?
Are you in business for the long-term?

Great article, thanks! I currently work fulltime and do web design and blogging on the side, so I am just letting the business kind of grow at its own pace and seeing where it goes and some day, when I feel confident that I can make a living from just the web design, I plan to be self-employed. After reading this article, I am glad I’ve chosen to go this route – keeping my regular job and working towards being self-employed, not putting all my eggs in just one basket I guess. Thanks again!

Hello Libby,
Thanks for the comment. When I was working full-time doing website for a company. I found that I was hitting a ceiling in my earnings and progression through the company. So I decided to do web design, in my spare time too.
Freelance web design from my own experience is a nightmare, you found hidden challenges and people taken their time to pay you. Personally, I’d focus on developing a product where you paid immdiately. The choice is up to you, I can only guide you from my experience, but its food for thought.
Web design clients come and go. Sadly, many people look at cost as the main factor than quality.

James,
Nice post. Working from home is not easy, particularly at first it can really be a scramble to make ends meet, but once it gets going it can really be an awesome thing.
I like d that you pointed out to be a little wary of what Internet Marketers are trying to “sell” you. There are some good things out there, but even on the “good” things all internet marketers have something of a vested interest in getting you to buy.
It could even be the “right” product, it may not just be right for “you”. It is good to be a little skeptical, particularly for people working on a tight budget.
Thanks for a good guest post, going to check out your site now…

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the comment. Every body who has a website or blog is in sales. Regardless, if there is a buy now button. There content is the sales pitch, even it is expressing a different point of view. Being in business is tough. Many people miss out the journey to gain success.

I recently lost my job. I already have another job lined up but that was just something that made me realize that I need to start taking my life into my own hands.
It is so easy for outsiders to snatch away control from you if you give it to them by working a normal job. Yes, you can be very successful but you never know what might happen at any moment. I recently wrote a post on this very topic.
Starting your own business definitely is not easy but it is well worth it.

Hello Wayne,
Having control is very important. The sad thing is when working for an employer they don’t like you developing an online business in your spare time. You need to break the rules a little. Once you’ve been made redundant from an employer, it’s not your problem anymore.

The prospect of always being responsible for all the work is what scares me the most about being out on my own. But the freedom is amazing. It’s definitely not for someone with anxiety problems, but for me, it’s been wonderful.

There’s no doubt that working from home has its disadvantages. In my case the biggest problem is lack of motivation. The fact that you’re free to do whatever you want, since you’re home turns out to be the downfall. Sometimes when I’m trying to write something, I say to myself why writing, when I can watch some TV and it all goes to hell. If you make yourself a schedule of some sort, there should be no problems though.

Motivation is the most important factor. I strongly feel that people what to be in control of their lives rather than a boss tell you what to do and when to do it.
Motivation can be tough.

Thanks for telling it like it is mate. Running and maintaing a business is serious stuff whether its online of off. I’m getting sick and tired of reading crap like: “I started a six-figure buisness in 5 minutes and so can you!”
I am currently working full time but have goals and ambitions to make a living online. I know it’s going to take a lot of hard work, eperimenting and failure before I get to where I want to be.
Thanks for sharing.

I was a great employee and loved my employers and felt the love in return. I had high paying jobs as a business analyst and technical writer in software. It was cool…
but it was NOTHING like working for myself is. I haven’t replaced my income, but that doesn’t matter! That’s the funny part. I believe that entrepreneurs are born and not made. Some people are meant to do their own thing. I am one of those people.
To your point about working while starting a solo career – it’s definitely a good strategy. It takes a lot longer that way, and the rest of life could suffer while you try and build one career while working in another.
Either way, it’s worth it.
Cheers!

Hi Tia,
I was a great employee too. But I wasn’t appreciated at times. It is sad. I can understand why people want control.
I’d be careful about making the rest of your life suffer. I’ve done that and felt so depressed. You need interests outside of blogging. If that fails you lose everything.

Oh man, this is strangely parallel to my mindset at the moment except that I’m willingly transitioning away from my job.
Like you said, while you’re working you should be building up your knowledge and income streams until it eventually creates a stable enough revenue that you can cut back at your work.
From there, you’ll have twice the time toward your own business while holding part-time. Keep working at it until it equals out a full time income.
Finally, push hard and you’ll turn that break-even entrepreneurial business into a highly successful one now that you have all the time in the world to work on it.
Ya know, even if you’re laid-off or fired from your job – use this time to do what you’ve always wanted to. We only have so much time in the world and it’s not to be spent working every day for other people – scarface style: the world is yours.

If you decide to work from home, make sure that you set yourself a fixed working schedule and follow it strictly, otherwise you’ll start your PC after waking up and shutting it down immediately before you are going to bed which will eventually burn you down.

I once had someone tell me to put an sign on the office door that shows the working hours of each day. This is to ensure you stick with the hours plus to ensure other people in your household know your hours and know not to bother you during those hours. That being said, interuptions are something that we have to deal with as they happen. My wife works at home and she did put up her working hours sign and it helps during the summer when the kids are home from school but they will still interupt, just not as often.
Good luck to you!

Hi there,
What I would suggest gently move into working for yourself but do to gradually. We are still in a global recession. Having a job is ideal, becuase you can support your business with your jobs income.
What is important is to work hard from home. I suggest taking a week off from work and just working from home and give it a trail period. It is best to experiment, without losing an income stream. If Plan A doesn’t work you can still move to Plan B.
Although the work from home business may seem like a bed of roses to many, you never know when the source of business will run dry. When I was made redundant I have several clients in the works and then because of their circumstances things changed. Web design and web marketing was seen as a nice to have rather than “You Must” have it.
I would focus on networking like crazy whilst in employment and if you wanted to expand your business take a day or two of from work. I’ve done it in the past to get jobs done.
Depending on the type of business you run, I’d develop a type of information product. You only create it once and you can sell it multiple times over.
I hope this helps.
James´s last [type] ..Top Blog Posts You Must Read
Thanks- you have certainly helped. I think I will let the work from home business settle and run smoothly before even considering leaving my regular job- so long as I can manage both, there is no reason to worry. You are right, in this global recession and times of uncertainty no decisions should be made in a hurry.
James, firstly I’m sorry to hear you lost your job. I used to work as an employee, but I volunteered for redundancy, effectively removing any uncertainty and awaiting for the knife to fall. I’m not saying that it’s been easy working for myself, but it has been the best thing I’ve ever done. A lot of people go into self employment as a good technician, ie they can do this or that (plumbing, hairdressing etc) – but what they find before too long is that they’ve replaced one dollar for hours job with another.
Great points, well made.

Hi Matthew,
You’ve hit the nail on the head there. Having a job is a good idea, to pay the basics then use your spare time to create leads, develop networks, and your online business.
You just need to be prepared to jump ship on your own terms rather than your employers.

Hi James,
It is so easy to be taken in by all these promises of instant riches online and as you say this just does not happen.
You have outlined a very sensible approach to starting an online business from home James. I agree that if at all possible start whilst still in employment, although this may be difficult to do due to various factors it is by far the best way to start for obvious reasons.
If a new home based venture can be started with sensible small steps from home without the added financial pressures of a normal business, then it should be possible to build from a good foundation.
Enjoyed your post James and I look forward to checking out your blog for more informative advice.

I am fortuante enough for now to be able to have a full-time job and work online part time until I can replace my income. Trying to do this part-time at night is also very difficult. There are basically the same problems but there is also the security of a full-time job. I just found out that the facility I work in will be shut down sometime mid 2011. So I have a lot of hard work to do between now and then.
Organization is another important area for me when it comes to working from home. I mean organization of time, work area, and tasks. This will be a major focus for me when the day comes.
Good luck to you!

James,
Great article and responses. Looks like the topic has many interested. I’m in a strange place. In 2009 I lost my job. I started my own blog/website and working for myself while trying to find another full time job…
I had hoped and thought that my online website would be my full time job and source of income. Like everyone else, it was a full time job, even more-so since my computer was on from morning to night.
In a strange way, I found working for myself online more difficult than working for a company. In July I was offered and accepted a position and now – once again working in the “corporate world” instead of for myself online. I’ve learned that I work harder for someone else other than myself. Most of all, I like being with people again. Yes, people, gossip and socializing are the evils of the world, but I missed them!

It all depends to where your happiness will be. Working from home means freedom. Some people loves freedom, and if they are free they are capable of doing anything including the opportunity to excel in their talents, being happy , being rich and being successful. No limits imposed…
Contrary to working with an employer, some people loves the paycheck more than frustrations in their day job. I heard a lot of complaints about failed promotions (even they are doing very well), low salary received despite doing excellent jobs, doing daily overtimes, forced work, sick with office politics…all at the expense of having a monthly paycheck.
It all depends on what type of person you are, entrepreneurs loves challenges of doing themselves and they always succeed if they continually have that entrepreneurial spirit and attitude. If those persons working from home treats their work as a business venture, they can always be successful in the long run. Guaranteed paycheck is not often the answer, there is more to life than having a pay check.
A Russian proverb says: “What makes you happy makes you rich”. This always appear to be true. If you read stories of successful entrepreneurs, their life all started to be sad and disappointing. They keep trying and believing success, now if you might observed; persistent entrepreneurs always end up not having a paycheck but having millions in their account.

Hello Jeanine,
I agree with some of the comments made. I agree life is than a pay check, but we also need to be realistic that creating a business takes time. The largest concern of any business is “cashflow”, if you’re got a profit and cashflow, you’re in business.
It takes a long time to be successful in business. I’ve you’ve got that attitude of success you’ll do well.
A business is more of a long-term solution. Where pay check to pay check is a real difficulty to live. It’s finding something you can do and make a profit that is the key.

Great and honest post, which I really relate to.
I have been working as an aerospace contractor since 2004 and in 2005 I got my dream ticket an 13 year contract with the UK military, fantastic the best of both worlds, tax efficient and secure job. All was well until 2010, contractors do not get paid over christmas and the week after the last festive season I got laid off.
Now because I had a long term contract I had not taken my Internet career seriously, now I had a month to get it all working or find a new contract. Needless to say I trialled pretty much every marketing killer secret and made no real progress, I did find a new contract, and discovered the true ultimate secret, walk in the shadow of a successful person, ie get a mentor.
Internet marketing often means working for 24 hours solid as your deadlines approach and problems occur, so it is not all beaches and high fives in Las Vegas for the average person, plus I am now separated due to this after 16 years together.
However despite all of this, I love the fact that I am alive and carving out my own destiny but I still rely on my contract to pay the bills!

I think it is really smart of you to encourage people to work on their self-employment business part time while they maintain a regular more traditional job. I cannot agree more. People incorrectly assume that they will be making big bucks online in a really short period of time. Everyone thinks they are a little smarter or a little more dedicated than the next person. This is simply untrue. As with any business, it takes a while to learn what really works.

I agree, this business can truly strain your relationships if and only if you decided to prioritize your work over family. Time management is just the key. The main reason why I decided to shift my normal office attire into simple and comfortable home clothes while facing computer is because of my family. I want to get closer to them. I want to see my kids each and every time, even when I’m working that’s why I decided to grab the opportunity. Just by learning the right way, the right focus, it will not truly lead you any wrong.

I totally agree with you. The only difference is that, I’ve started online work as my first job. I can see people problematic with their finances even if they are in a higher position. Admittedly, it crosses my mind to work as a corporate employee. But considering the earnings including the expenses, for me it isn’t justifiable to work outside. I for one can attest to the difficulties that come with leaving your job early and ‘hoping’ to make it online
Earnings in an online job could be huge and overwhelming, but somehow an online job requires hard work, patience and connections. If you are determined then go ahead and start making money online.
There are many realities of working from home .Many successful business people apply lots of time into their ventures. That can lead to neglecting other areas of our lives, especially with people we love and care about.Developing an online business can solve the problem.Besides, you don’t have to work for others .You can be the boss.
Make sure that this attractive option doesn’t distract from your work or your family. Trying to give 50% to both at all times will be the equivalent of spending no time with either.

I like that! thanks for sharing
I started like everyone else I guess: first as a part time job and then I switched to a full time job. Now, I am making enough money to pay my bills and without having a stupid boss
