How do you Squidoo?

squidoo marketing

by Alex on July 27, 2010

I wrote this post because i have been meaning to for a while now and recently a Blog Angel wrote to me telling me that she had created a Squidoo lens and would I help her by tweeting it and liking it. I happily obliged and when I actually saw the page I thought ‘no, this lens is so incredible, I will use its promotion as an excuse to finally write that (THIS) post’.

The beauty of Squidoo is that you can do… whatever you want!

For those unfamiliar with Squidoo, allow me to give you the quick ‘I’m not 100% sure myself but let me sound convincing and give you my version of what it is anyway’ explanation. :)

Squidoo.com is the brainchild of Seth Godin , who is an Internet Marketing King in his own right, and the whole concept and idea of the site really reflects the genius behind the man, because what Squidoo does is allow you to create a page (called a Lens) on just about anything you want, for absolutely no cost to you what-so-ever, and the perks are just awesome!

Why would you want to create a Squidoo Lens in the first place?

Squidoo.com is setup in such a way that when you create a new page, called a lens – the URL for this page will be squidoo.com/thenameofyourlens, which is fantastic if you want to optimise a certain key phrase (the most powerful place to put a keyword in relation to SEO is the URL). Squidoo is also a HUGE site with a lot of authority and excellent PageRank.  In Search Engine Optimisation and Keyword Optimisation speak this is like striking GOLD because what you have is a site with very good PR that is saying ‘hey come and give yourself as many relevant and high quality backlinks to your own site or offer as you like – free.’

Want to make some Squidoo Dollars?

Squidoo also offers you the ability to make money from your Lens because you are able to promote Amazon products and share the profits of Adsense revenue generated from your Lens, provided of course you are an Amazon Partner and Adsense publisher. So whilst you struggle to get your own site ranked in order to generate revenue, the lens which you built in order to get a backlink for it in the first place is quietly earning more!

So why wouldn’t you create a Squidoo Lens then?!

If you want to create a Squidoo Lens, or thirty, with the idea of creating a lot of quality backlinks to your niche site or sales page then you had better make sure they are really good quality lenses because nine times of out ten your Lens is going to rank before the actual page it’s linking to and even though you can still make money from your Lens, do you really want to share the profits with Squidoo? For that reason you need to make sure that your Squidoo lens is genuinely valuable and contains unique information that urges the reader to click through to your site. This becomes a win win situation because not only are you creating quality backlinks, you are also creating new destinations to leverage your content and spread your brand.

Tips for Building your Squidoo Lens

As I stated earlier, there is no right way to build a lens in Squidoo, but if you are a blogger with at least ten posts under your belt then you will already have a good idea what works and what doesn’t. Like any piece of information that you share, your lens needs to be broken up into chunks that make it easy to read and digest so adding images and creating lists and subheadings is definitely advisable. This is an easy task because when you create a lens with Squidoo you are given what are called ‘modules’ and all you simply do is add them as you require. I usually have an Amazon module so that I can use my Amazon account to link to products that either relate to or are what the lens is about, and then I will have 3 or 4 text modules, adding an image to each and then making sure I have a keyword rich link pointing to the page I am trying to get ranked.

This whole process takes about 5 minutes because you can literally take articles you have written already and just cut and paste them into your lens.

Squidoo Marketing

Technically you don’t have to do anything once you have created your lens, but like any piece of information that you put out into the world wide web –promotion is king (sorry content, you are nothing without him). If you do choose to promote your lens then you can simply do what Joella did (yep, that’s the blog Angel) and ask people to visit it and ‘like it’ through the Squidoo tool or a Facebook interface. Obviously the more ‘likes’ a lens gets and the more visitors it receives, the more it is promoted through squidoo itself. If you can manage to create a lens that is popular enough and makes Squidoo’s ‘Lens of the day’ you can receive 100,000 hits in 24 hours easily!*

*The last lens of the day I remember was ‘How to crochet Bacon’ and was a guide showing you how to knit various items like a bacon scarf and a fried egg pillow, so don’t expect your ‘how to make money blogging’ lens to make ‘lens of the day’ anytime soon.

Submit to RSS Feeds/Bookmarking directories

Part of the off page optimisation process involves creating quality backlinks as well as submitting various pages to feeds and directories through bookmarking services. Now that you have created your lens, even though it is there to provide a quality backlink why not submit it to the RSS directories as well and help it on its way. We utilise Squidoo to Market our wares but always remember to Market your Squidoo too (I am beginning to feel like Dr Suess writing this post, if I say Squidoo one more time?!?!)

The Show and Tell

I have recently started creating lenses under a pseudonym because of the fact that I only want the ‘Alex Whalley’ Brand associated with ‘making money online’, so I felt that having 100 lenses on everything from pool chlorine to foot warmers would perhaps muddy the waters a little, but before I did that I created a few lenses under my own name. I have attached a link to one of them here so you can see how I created it.

http://www.squidoo.com/thebumbobabyseat

squidoo marketingFREE BLOGGING EBOOKS!! (this is what a real lens looks like)

The reason this post exists is because Joella A.K.A ‘The Blog Angel’ wrote to me and asked me to help promote her lens by Tweeting it to my followers. Once I saw the lens I thought a simple tweet would not do it justice because what Joella has done is create a resource for bloggers that is beyond anything I have ever seen before!

Here it is here at http://www.squidoo.com/free-blogging-ebooks and I strongly recommend that you go and have a look because if there was ever a decent ebook written about anything to do with blogging, Joella has listed and linked to it for your convenience.

At the very least go and ‘like’ this lens and help a fellow blogger promote a resource that she must have worked on tirelessly. While you’re at it, go and like my lens too. I know you probably don’t ‘like’ baby seats in any way shape or form, but just pretend that you do … for me. :)

The Squidoo Summary

Setup 100 Lenses that provide incredible value, use keywords in your anchor text, promote them to RSS feeds with bookmarking services – you just created an amazing army of pages that not only leverage your content and spread your influence, but also combine to help your overall site rank higher, AND they all quietly earn income for you as well.

Brilliant.

Hi Alex,
This is an awesome review about Squidoo. Even though I am a member, but I have never paid much attention to it. But now I under the benefits that I could have achieved if I had taken it seriously.
One question though…”you can literally take articles you have written already and just cut and paste them into your lens.” does this mean that I can publish a lens about something which I have already written on my blog or somewhere else?

Hey Sourav.
Glad to have reinspired the squidoo in you! To answer, yes you can literally create an exact copy of your post and link back to wherever, duplicate content is irrelevent because everything around the page is different.

I actually made a lens at one point a while back and have completely forgotten about it since. This seems a great resource, even if only for a good backlink. The lens you made for the bumbo babyseat is pretty cool. Thanks for showing the linkage between all of these sites!

I am going to go check out Joella’s lens now. Have a great day!

Mate glad to have helped, I personally don’t see why hiding your URLs is the rage. Are people really that evil?

Alex,

Nice post about Squidoo. I certainly use it for backlink purposes. I have about 25 pages there now ( a small number, I know), under a few different account names. Like I said I find it great for volume of backlinks, on what is basically re-purposed content anyhow. They are pretty fun to make and play with too.

I always hear how they can be a decent stream of income by themselves and have not experienced that though. Perhaps I have simply ignored the Marketing aspect of these sites a little too much. I am able to drive 1-2 people to land on my sites per day, but that is fairly piddly, I do a heck lot better through ezine articles.

I will try some of your steps for marketing the sites and see if I can increase that volume.

Thanks,

Steve

Hey Steve,

25 aint bad mate, it’s actually a damn sight better than I am doing at present.
When I first started making them I thought fun was the last thing they were, but now I have to admit it only takes a few minutes and then you’re done.
Thanks for your comments Steve, glad you enjoyed the post.

Great tips Alex.. Trying to make 100 lenses is quite a task, but if I can do 5 a week, it does become more manageable and can turn into a great long term investment if you can get some good backlinks to them and have plain great content on them.

Hey Aaron,

Hahah that’s awesome, you ironically just helped motivate ME to build 100 lenses. There are people making serious money with Lenses alone on Squidoo! so imagine the leveraged power of ALL of your posts as lenses as well, all pointing to sales pages you create (can’t have affiliate links)
Thanks for stopping by Aaron.

I thought Joella’s page was so fabulous! And now, you have gone and written this post that makes me want to start setting up some lenses pronto. Knowing me, pronto will arrive sometime in January, but I’m keeping this post bookmarked. My Google Reader starred area is starting to look like I’m an Alex Whalley stalker. I have tons of your SEO related posts bookmarked there to refer back to when I buckle down in that area too. Looks like I’ll have a busy winter!

Hey Alex,

First time visit, awesome blog found it through Sally Neil, you know, I myself have been looking into using Squidoo, I recently found a *free* resource on the net showing in a 3 video tutorial format how to add an opt-in box to any Squidoo lens, which I felt was quite a powerful utility to have on such a social site, especially if the lens is geared towards a popular in demand niche, just think how targeted the list would be?
check out the videos here ==> http://www.the199.com/squidoooptin/videoguide.php

Ill check out your blog from time to time Alex cheers….Ed.

Great post Alex and thanks for sharing Joella’s link too! This is very similar to the e-library that I have on my blog and I’m amazed. Got it bookmarked. I’ve created about two lens on Squidoo. Ever since I’ve been focusing on blogging I haven’t been pulled back but Joella’s lens is AMAZING. Kind of pushes me to get back into the game a bit. I’m going to have to think of something but hands down, it won’t be as good as Blog Angel’s. :)

Thanks for sharing this amazing post Alex.

Alex,

I’m as close to speechless as I get.

When I asked you to help promote the Squidoo Lens I thought a tweet or two, maybe a little bookmarking, but a whole post inspired by my Lens? Wow, thank you so much.

It did take a bit of work and I still have more publications to add (believe it or not). I’ve also got a few more lenses in the works. Now I know who to go to for some real promotional juice.

Thanks so much again, Alex. You are a doll! And thanks to everyone who has chipped in, visited the lens and are helping to promote it.

Hi Alex,
I’m trying to catch-up on my Blog Hopping. I had a Squidoo Lens ……. really I had eight, but I let all of them go but one which was the first one. I’ve made 0.08 cents so far!
Seth Godin has a killer Blog though! Joella does have a great lens, I’m afraid I never had that much energy to put into my lens.

I’ve used Squidoo for linkbuilding before, which as you mentioned, it is really great for. I’ve never created my own lens before though. Do you just write about whatever you want and then link it to whatever, or do you create lenses off of topics you already write about on your blog?

Hey Alex,

Great tips, just going to visit Joella’s blog now (love her name btw, my wifes name is jo and my little girls name is ella) and will visit yours as well.

Use to use squidoo a while back and found it quite easy to rank on page 1 of google, then google for some reason started slapping all the lenses so I gave up with them.

Brilliant idea to use current content and articles to create lenses. I think I will have to get 100 lenses going now, what have you started, more work, no time hahaha.

Many thanks for sharing

I think that is a great idea.
I profess to trying it once or twice, the duplicate content issue does not seem to affect it, and I think its because of the modules and way that the content is formatted on the lens itself, must be seen differently or something.
Either way, I still got more hits to the original post than to the lens itself so I can only see this as being effective if you were reviewing a product or promoting something – but then I guess that just becomes another web2.0 link andI am no longer answering your question LOL

Thanks for commenting Ana, I know you always stop by, and actually, its good you dont always comment, you make me think too much! LOL
